Mom's Cancer Treatment

We, the children of Garth and Lisa Goossen, are coming to you for help.

Mom is 47 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2018. She had the tumor frozen and was told the cancer was gone. In October of 2020, there was a recurrence and she had to have a mastectomy followed by 5 weeks of radiation. Once again, she was told she was clear of cancer. Now in January of this year, they found out that she has stage 4 breast cancer that had traveled to her liver. Surgery was done to remove part of her liver a few weeks ago. Since surgery, there have been many tests done to determine what would be the best course of action. The doctor’s recommendation feels like the right thing to do, but because it is a fairly new type of treatment, insurance won’t pay for it, and the hospital/doctor doesn’t offer a payment plan. A good share of the cost will need to be paid before treatment begins. The treatment will require IV infusions through a port, five days a week for 3 weeks, then twice a week for at least 6 months, possibly a year. It will require a one week stay in Kansas City, 6 hrs from home, where the doctors can monitor her to make sure she doesn’t have a reaction to the infusions. Also, Dad has had to take quite a bit of time off work lately to take Mom to her appointments and this will mean even more time off work for Dad, plus a motel for a week and dining out. If Mom does ok with the treatments, she will be able to finish the remaining 2 weeks in Wichita, which will mean making a 4 hour round trip drive every day. After the first 3 weeks, the infusions will be twice a week in Wichita.
