It has been my dream for a long time to go to Tokyo, Japan to study art and graphic design and I have the wonderful opportunity to go this upcoming summer through Temple University in Japan however I need some help to get there. The program is 11 weeks, starting May 22nd, and going until August 4th. During my time abroad I will be able to participate in many multicultural events and also study a new culture.
The money you donate will be going to my tuition for my semester abroad, where I will be taking three courses- Japanese Graphic Design History, Japanese Elements 1, and International Career Strategies. In the Japanese Graphic Design History course I will be learning about Japanese Design through the ages, from commercial and advertising art to graphic design and it’s milestones. I will also get the opportunity to visit Japanese Graphic Designers at their studios and and visit Graphic Design exhibitions around Japan to see design firsthand. In the International Career Strategies I will be learning about how to look for and prepare for an international career. Finally, the last course, Japanese Elements 1, is the first course that I would be taking to start learning Japanese to not only be able to talk to others during my time abroad but also to prepare myself for future careers/travel in Japan.
Since I am going into my senior year of college I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to grow as an artist in designer. During my trip I will use these courses and the city as inspiration to develop my art form which includes a lot of the Kawaii (cute) aesthetic which comes from the area of Harajuku in Tokyo. I know I will be successful in accomplishing these goals. After I graduate, I would also love the chance to come back to Tokyo after to work for a design company there or participate in the JET program, teaching english in Japan, and so this summer would be my chance to also start planning my future.
