A message from Joel:

It's Been awhile since I've been on this site.
We are truly grateful for all of the generous donations that have been made..... even when the world was on lockdown and unemployed.
I had Spencer mention that we'd have a celebration when Covid had slown down.... unfortunately that hasn't really happened and its been too long.
So we have decided to have a celebration with masks please.
Here are the details I hope you can make it.

Joel and Jennifer wanted to let everyone know they plan on having a memorial service/celebration of life in Los angeles and another in Minnesota once the Corona Virus situation calms down.

Everyone's generosity and kind words have been overwhelmingly supportive. It is truly inspiring how many people have opened their hearts during this difficult time.

A message from Joel:

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help.

The around the clock meals 24/7, KRISTA for helping with Ellis and keeping him occupied and cleaning our house, my parents and the whole Ruiz family for allowing me to cry, lose my cool and listening to my daily updates and rants, the Brandon and O’Brien’s for being a shoulder to cry on and thanks to the staff at Los Robles Hospital and the staff at UCLA hospital staff and to the Hospice team Vitas and the around the clock nurses and doctors. To my Minnesota friends and family and my San Diego friends and family who drove up to be with us, to Greta who is with us now to watch over us.

To everyone who thought about us or prayed for us all over the country, all the flowers, gift cards and unbelievable amounts of donations and everyone in Local 728, Local 80 & 600 and any other IATSE, SAG & DGA family in the film industry. to the people we don’t know and the anonymous donations, to my cousins I haven’t seen since I was a kid or the cousins I baby sat when they were kids, to all the people at Chalice and Reverend Nica and all the Mid Wives gang who watch over us and take care of their own.
this is incredibly heart warming and helpful and thoughtful.

Today is day 2 with out our Liza Jane and it’s hard.... she is in our souls and our every thought.
I try not to post these private thoughts on social media becuz they are very private.. but darn it there’s so many of you who have helped
I just wanted to thank you all...
But most of all Liza Jane Ruiz... we will miss you more than anything.
Please DO NOT POST OR DO NOT LIKE.
you can message me if you want.

It is with a heavy heart and through tears I write you this afternoon.

Today at 2:35pm Liza Jane Ruiz left us for a better place. She was strong until the end and gave up her fight surrounded by family and friends.

We shed tears and ache for her family, but hopefully, we find comfort in fond memories of a spirit too early to leave that reminded us to live every day like it's your last, sing at the top of your lungs, and love unconditionally.

Sometimes the words don’t reach.

======================================================================

On June 22, Liza Jane (Elizabeth) Ruiz was involved in a drowning accident that placed her in the hospital for over a week. After receiving care, it has been determined that there is no hope for recovery and hospice is the best course of action.  She arrived home July 2 to live out the rest of her days in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family and friends. Her life expectancy is undetermined, but it could be days or weeks.

Liza Jane was a vibrant, energetic 3 year old. Wise beyond her years and courageous beyond her size. Her laughter filled rooms and her spirit was a huge presence. Strong willed and fearless, she would often brave the dark to escort her older brother to the bathroom :).  She would dance and sing at the top of her lungs any time there was music playing in the house, which if you know Joe was constant. Liza made a decisive mark on anyone who knew her, she will be profoundly missed.

Liza's mother Jennifer is one of the most passionate, courageous, and loving women we know. Her father Joel is one of the kindest, funniest, sweetest human beings you would ever meet, with generosity beyond compare. Her brother Ellis (6) is equally energetic and strong willed, who helped guide his sister through her young life with pride and fortitude. Liza looked forward to being with her older sister Aurora, who was always there when she needed her. Right now, the entire Ruiz family needs our help.

This GoFundMe was set up by a small group of friends to ease the financial burden created by substantial medical costs, counseling costs (now and many years in the future), and any other unexpected expenses resulting from this horrific event. Our hope is all of our generosity and kindness can provide some relief to the Ruiz family in this unexplainable situation.

For now you can use this site as a resource for information, respectfully giving the Ruiz family the space  they need to deal with the immediate future.  You are welcome to comment below, share stories, and connect.  Updates will be provided as information is made available.

No donation is too small, thank you.

**My name is Spencer Combs and I have been a friend of Joel Ruiz for over 25 years. we worked together in the San Diego film community in the beginnings of our careers. After Joel moved to LA I lived with him while I would work in LA, commuting from SD. Our families have remained close through the years. As stated above, the funds will be used to mitigate substantial medical costs, counseling costs (now and many years in the future), loss of work, and any other unexpected expenses resulting from this horrific event. All donations will go directly to Joel and Jennifer Ruiz as they will be the sole beneficiaries.
