On September 30, 2016, Tamunobelema Theodora Abaku had an accident that resulted in a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). The World Health Organization refers to SCI as a life changing injury here . Following the near-fatal accident, Belema woke up to the realization that she had suffered immediate paralysis from her lower abdomen down, eventually leading to severe spastic paraplegia (Paralysis of the lower half of the body most often as a result of trauma). Needless to say, this was a most unexpected transformation of her life and future. Since then, she has undergone one surgery after another in attempts to reduce some of the medical consequences of the accident. However, she soon discovered that the medical term had implications for every aspect of her life and living. There is insufficient time and space to describe the effect of this accident on her life; it is best to encourage you to imagine not being able to control any part of your body from your lower abdomen. Everything from moving to sleeping, has become a project, to be subdivided into tasks, considered from all angles and to be adjusted for the consequences of paralysis. Needless to say, the several surgeries, medical necessities and adjustment to her life has resulted in unplanned and very high costs. Despite having to reorganize her life and adapt to her new reality, she has remained undaunted in her determination to meet the challenges of living and increase her opportunities to fend for herself. . Your donation will give Belema a fair chance at a productive, healthy life. She has received an unconditional offer for a Masters in Digital Media Management at Sheffield Hallam University, starting in January 2022. This will help her develop a career and ultimately afford the increased costs of living with a spinal injury. It will also allow her to find new educational and adjustment opportunities, which will ultimately provide her a better lifestyle. However, it comes at a tremendous cost.
