Living Positive Kenya - Queen's Alt Practicum

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Mohamed Yusuf , and I am currently completing my B.Ed degree at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario! One of the great opportunities that Queen's allows for us to embark on is our Alternative Practicum. This gives B.Ed students a chance to journey into another realm of education, outside of the classroom for a three week period either locally, nationally, or internationally.

As part of my Alternative Practicum in correspondence with my education focus; youth at-risk, I have decided to complete my placement in Kenya, within the Living Positive Kenya (LPK) organization. This is an organization led by Mary Wanderi, also known as "Mum",  where their mission is to  "support underprivileged women, orphans and their families to live healthy and economically stable lives; through community engagement, building self-empowerment, and business development". As a Queen's B.Ed student, I along with 10 other students, and two staff will be working with Mum and LPK in order to provide education and support for at risk populations; predominantly focusing on women diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.

I am so very excited to be embarking on this journey, so that I may grow as an educator as a teacher, as a learn, and just as a person in general. However, a trip of this magnitude does evoke a great financial commitment! The purpose of this GoFundMe is to raise funds for my trip which will include covering: flights, modest accommodations, visas, etc. Furthermore, I will be using half of my funds raised in order to provide aid to "Mum" as well the women working within this organization. Needs of the program have changed from year to year, and there are many micro-situation that require immediate financial need; for example, building maintenance needs due to the heavy rain season which causes flooding in some of the women's house.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my story! I will be conducting a review of my trip and what I've learned once I am back in April! Therefore, if you would be interested in learning about my progress as well as my experiences, feel free to email me!!
