At 97 years-young, Dr. Gladys and her Foundation, The Foundation for Living Medicine , are leading the charge to change the face of modern medicine by transforming the current disease model to one that focuses on the individual and the wholeness of life.
Meet Dr. Gladys T. McGarey, the Mother of Holistic Medicine.
Dr. Gladys, as she is affectionately known, is a 97-year-old trailblazer and game-changing physician who has dedicated her 67-year career to changing the face of modern medicine. From her colorful upbringing in exotic 1920s India, through a lifetime of inspiring adventures, to her harrowing medical mission to Afghanistan at age 85, Dr. Gladys has dedicated her life to shifting medical paradigms and bringing the concept of holistic and integrative medicine to the masses. She is internationally recognized for her pioneering work, not only in holistic medicine, but her impact is also evident in the areas of natural birthing and the physician-patient partnership.
Among her many accomplishments as a game-changing holistic medical doctor, author, and speaker, Dr. Gladys is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association, as well as the co-founder of the Academy of Parapsychology and Medicine. She was the first to utilize acupuncture in the U.S. and trained other physicians how to use it.
Dr. Gladys believes that we "have become so focused on preventing death that we are killing life." She says, "Medicine isn't just about curing diseases. It is helping people tap into the healing spirit within themselves so they do their own healing. Life itself is the Great Healer, and Life and Love together transform, no matter what the [healing] modality is."
