Liver Transplant & Stroke Recovery for Julie

Donation protected
In February 2024 my sister Julie Bushey-Holbrook was diagnosed with a liver disease along with Hepatopulmonary Syndrome which is a rare but serious condition to the lungs of people that have advanced liver disease. Julie had to be put on a high priority liver transplant list because her oxygen levels were declining and making it very hard for her to breathe.

After being put on the liver transplant list, four days later there was a donor. Julie had her transplant on March 13, 2024. The transplant didn’t go as well as they had planned with many complications including having a large stroke.

As of April 17th Julie’s recovery has been slow but moving in a positive direction. She is no longer in a medical induced coma and had been put on a ventilator with a trach to help her breathe. She was on a ventilator for only a few days before taking her off which she is now breathing on her own with 24 hour oxygen (she still needs the trach which could be in for a long time). She cannot speak with the trach but she has answered “some” of our questions by nodding her head. She has been taken of several machine’s that had been supporting her body since her surgery but now just has a few left.

With a large stroke she still has a problem in following in commands and has no movement on her right side but does squeeze our hand when asked on her left side. She gets tired very easily and rest a lot when we visit. The stroke recovery could take months to even years before she will recover from it. We have to be patient and give her time for her body to heal not only from a large stroke but her liver transplant as well. The liver still seems to be doing fine and staying stable.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us in prayer and with the donations in the gofundme account. It’s very much appreciated since Julie is in the Boston hospital and it's so far away from us in VT. The funds have helped in our hotel stay, gas, parking garage fees and meals.
