Liver Transplant for Tulombe

Tulombe Tembo is the son of Mr Mathias and Mrs Ester Tembo, our family friends from Ndola Zambia. Mr Mathias Tembo works as a Researcher at the Tropical Disease Research Centre in Ndola, Zambia. Mr Mathias Tembo’s research on use of a disinfection agent to disinfect drinking water at household level was instrumental in controlling cholera outbreaks in Zambia. Mr Tembo is also an elder at Ndola Baptist Church.
Tulombe, who is 16 years old, is in grade 11. He was selected to David Kaunda Secondary, the National Technical Secondary after excelling among top pupils at his former school. In July 2018 the school head teacher phoned Mathias that his son was unwell at School. When he rushed there only to find him jaundiced with ascites. The University Teaching Reference Hospital in Zambia performed investigations and noted that the liver was the problem but was not able to establish the cause. After all this period the Zambian health facilities reached the limit of local capacity and the consultant has recommended urgent referral to India for a liver transplant.
Tulombe is passionate about going back to school and is determined to study medicine, a potential which is evident by his excellent performance in examinations so far. Tulombe’s parents are trying to raise money locally to send Tulombe and two family donors to India. The mother will go as bedside care giver though she is also the compatible donor. Both parents are in their late 50s.
The estimated cost of sending Tulombe to India is about £23,000.00 (US$ 30,000.00). This estimate includes the cost of further investigations, accommodation for three people for two months, the liver transplant and medical expenses. The advice is that this operation should be done as soon as possible while Tulombe's body is still fairly strong. This will help the recovery process.
