Live the Dream: Kill the Cancer

Donation protected
Imagine being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.  Now imagine being told the potential cure wasn’t going to be covered by your insurance company.  As a result, it was going to cost you $10,000 out-of-pocket every few months for treatment, along with $400 every week at the grocery store to purchase the massive volume of organic produce needed (mostly for juicing) to follow the strict diet protocol set in place by your doctors.

You’d undoubtedly feel overwhelmed by the hefty financial burden.  You’d wonder how you were ever going to find a way to manage all these insane bills along with your regular monthly bills so you could keep a roof over your head.  You’d probably find it difficult to keep focus on your health and healing rather than on the rapidly mounting debt.  Luckily, you don’t have to deal with all of this in reality…. but sadly, my brother Dan does.

Dan was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Myxoid Chondrosarcoma.  It affects the soft tissue in the body, and now it’s targeting his lungs.  It seems an especially cruel fate for someone whose passion and livelihood depend on his ability to play the saxophone. After consulting with his doctor, it was revealed that this isn’t just any type of cancer - it’s a variety so rare that only about 100 people a year are diagnosed with it.  As a result, there is very little research being done, no clear path towards treatment, and a very low survival rate.  To make matters worse, Dan was told that chemotherapy and radiation weren’t options for treatment because of his type of cancer and its location in his lungs.

With news this devastating, it would be easy for Dan to crumble beneath the weight of such a grim prognosis.  But rather than surrendering to his disease, Dan dug down deep inside and found something more powerful than fear – faith.  His faith in God carried him through this cancer when it first developed in his leg 4-years ago (which eventually went into remission), and it has sustained him since it’s reappearance in his lungs in September 2017.

That same faith has also given him hope and shown him a path towards recovery.  Since there is limited treatment for Myxoid Chondrosarcoma in the United States, Dan and his wife Lisa have travelled back and forth to C.H.I.P.S.A. hospital in Mexico in their search for a cure.  This hospital is on the cutting edge of various kinds of immunotherapies, which has shown real promise when treating cancers that won’t respond to more conventional methods.

Dan and Lisa are feeling overwhelmed by the substantial financial burden that Dan’s lifesaving treatment has cost them, but their faith and spirits have been bolstered by the fact that Dan’s cancer hasn’t progressed since he began his treatment at C.H.I.P.S.A. hospital in February 2018!  Considering how notoriously aggressive this cancer is, its arrest is nothing short of amazing!!

They are on the right path.  Now it’s up to us to make sure they can keep their focus on the path ahead of them and not on the money it’s going to take to keep them on it.  Money should never be the deciding factor between life and death – let’s make sure it’s not.  PLEASE support my brother Dan during his journey towards a cure.
