Live Liver Transplant

Live Liver Donor

Just over a year and a half ago Sister Roberge learned her father had non-alcohol cirrhosis of the liver, also known as NASH. He was only 65 and had been providing for his family since the age of 17! Victor has spent his life dedicated to other people, he received the Serving Brother Officer of The Order from the Attorney General for over 13,000 hours of volunteer service with St. John Ambulance. He was an Advanced First Aid/CPR instructor for over 12 years, Advanced Oxygen Therapist, and always put his wife of 49 years and 3 daughters first. Sister Roberge has spent many hours at Victor's bedside on his many hospital stays, often walking to the hospital on her lunch and dinner breaks as the jail is a block away from the Hamilton General Hospital. Sister Roberge has been a primary caregiver for Victor while working full time as a Correctional Officer at HWDC and supporting her own family.

In February 2017, Sister Roberge's twin sister had an accident that left her with a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury. Sister Roberge spent 2 weeks at Connie's bedside not knowing what the prognosis was or who would care for Connie when released from the hospital. Sister Roberge became her sisters primary caregiver and now had 2 immediate family members, spending many days and nights in a hospital in 2 different cities. Both Victor and Connie need to be driven to appointments on a regular basis with only Sister Roberge's niece and son to help when available.

Shortly after this accident the family learned that Victor was in need of a liver transplant. Sister Roberge began the process of being tested to be her dads Live Liver Donor. Her Brothers and Sisters at Local 248 at HWDC have been providing tremendous support and the fundraising efforts made by them have, until now, covered many of the extra expenses associated with this process.

After about 20 different appointments, tests and consultations at the Toronto General Hospital within less than 2 months it was determined that Sister Roberge was a match however her liver was too small on its own. What Victor would need to survive would leave her with too little. Then began the process of looking for a second donor to then graft a portion of Sister Roberge and the second donors liver together and give that to Victor!

Sister Roberge's own partner has tested and after about 20 appointments, tests and consults, including a liver biopsy, Corrinne is also a match!! Her liver is big enough on its own! And during all of this Sister Roberge still comes to work with a smile on her face and trying to stay positive.

On Monday, September 25, 2017 we learned that sister Roberge's partner Corrinne will be her dad Victor's live liver donor next Wednesday, October 4, 2017!! As we are so happy to hear this, it does come with the need for accommodations close to the Toronto General Hospital for several days for Sister Roberge and her mom. Her dad will have to live close to the hospital for several weeks after discharge. There are so many extra expenses that we would not have thought of, parking, gas, accommodations, meals, loss of wages for Corrinne and so on. Our hope is to help this family and Sister Roberge alleviate some of the stressors and worries during this time for these dangerous surgeries.

Our goal is $5000. Prayers are also welcome!
