My amazing friend of over 30 years, who is an incredible mother has faced the unimaginable as a parent. Her 7 year old son Myles has been diagnosed with DIPG. I have set this account up on behalf of my friend Jennifer to help her little warrior, Myles beat this ugly disease and take the stress off of Jennifer when it comes to finances for all the unknown costs that lie ahead.
What is DIPG?
Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma is an inoperable and incurable cancerous brain tumor located in the middle of the brain stem. The survival rate is considered less than 1%. DIPG is a pediatric cancer but adults can get it too. Of those affected, 90% will die within 18 months. The remaining sufferers will live just slightly longer. There are promising treatments but all are ridiculously expensive and nearly out of reach for most families. DIPG gets an embarrassingly small amount of national funding. ALL childhood cancers combined gets less than 4% of the national funding. Divided up, DIPG gets about $500 in research per child.
We need to make the world aware of DIPG. Awareness brings in funding from compassionate people, and funding brings research. Research brings treatments.
Cancer doesn't stop when we log off Facebook or go to bed. Cancer GOES to bed with these children. Cancer goes to the park, to school, to the library, to a restaurant with these children, if they are lucky enough to be able to even go to these places. Cancer goes everywhere. Hitching a ride on the innocent.
DIPG families are aware 24/7. They don't get a choice. They don't have the luxury of signing out of social media and going to bed peacefully or forgetting about cancer. Parents shouldn't go to bed having nightmares and shouldn't have to wake up to the nightmare of DIPG. We need to show the word that this matters. Gold and Grey matter. These kids definitely matter.
