We have been working to secure a new home for our 36 year old daughter Lisbeth, where she can live independently with the assistance of caring helpers for the rest of her life. Lisbeth has a traumatic brain injury and a seizure disorder due to a viral illness contracted when she was 6 years old. After providing care for our daughter Lisbeth for fifteen years, Independence Association of Brunswick told us that they can no longer safely take care of her and have recommended that she be moved to a more institutional setting. We do not agree. Lisbeth deserves to live in the least restrictive setting. We fought IA for months, but it was a losing battle. They are unwilling to care for Lisbeth. In November they informed us that on December 31st
they will be closing Pinewood, her home, and that Lisbeth and her housemate must move out. Our plan has been to buy or build a home for Lisbeth so that she will never be forced to leave her safe space again. After several months of searching for a house or land on which to build, we learned that Independence Association is selling Pinewood. We made an offer and it was accepted. In a fortuitous turn of events, Lisbeth's new home will be her old home. We have contracted a new agency to staff Pinewood, and Lisbeth and her housemate will not uprooted. This is a huge blessing, for change is very difficult for these two special young women. We are now under contract and working on a transition plan. Our closing is January 19th, 2018 and we must still raise several thousand dollars for the down payment and closing costs. Please donate to this worthy cause if you are able!
