Lauren’s Story
Lauren was first diagnosed with an Arnold Chiari malformation at the age of 14. As explained to us by her then neurologist, surgery was not an option the risk of surgery was to great, those being paralysis, or a vegetative state. Lauren’s malformation was approximately 8mm, and medication could control her symptoms.
Fast forward 14 years, until 5 months Lauren had a very normal life. She worked enjoyed her profession, took long walks with her dog Timmy, she and Ed were saving to buy a house. Then the headaches began again with the constant dizziness, she began to lose her peripheral vision then much of her vision, her hearing and then the motor skills the list goes on. Her malformation is now 18mm’. Lauren is scheduled to have Neurosurgery on February 4th, 2015. She has not been able to work for the past 3months and they have exhausted all of their savings. Even though they have insurance, the out of pocket expenses are expected to top $20,000. Plus normal living expenses, medications, and transportation again the list goes on. It may be some time before she will be able to resume her normal life. It will take far more than $20,000 to keep Lauren, Ed and Timmy financially whole during this period.
