Help Lincoln Students Study Abroad

Did you know that Black Students represent less than 5% of all U.S. college students that participate in study abroad experiences? As students at Lincoln University, the first degree granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU), we aim to change that.

In Spring 2018 our professors, Dr. Nicole Files-Thompson and  Brandi Berry, with the help of Trejha Whitfiled as student life coordinator, will lead a group of us studying Travel Videography and Entrepreneurial Journalismin on study abroad in Jamaica, WI. We will spend the semester taking courses before travelling to JA for 3 weeks with faculty and staff for continued instruction and execution of final digital media projects.

Through lectures, skills application, and on-site production and research, we will be introduced to concepts and experiences that will enable us  to understand and respond to cultural differences. The classes will provide a forum through which we can reflect on and discuss our experiences, and share them digitally with the larger Lincoln and HBCU communities in an effort to increase students’ participation in study abroad.

During the SP18 semester we will:
Research Jamaican tourism, culture, cuisine, traditions, language, journalism, ecology, and destinations
Research travel journalism and production: --Documentary, vlogs, blogs, articles, travel journalism careers & media
Pre-Production- Research & Design final projects
Research and Design Social Media Campaign to promote global learning, with this class project as launch

During the Maymester in Jamaica we will:
Conduct Qualitative research, historical analysis, participant observation, and in-depth interviews
Produce blogs/vlogs/ investigative journalism pieces/travel memoirs/research papers/strategic communication campaigns

Service Learning & Cultural Experience: We will have days scheduled for service learning and cultural experiences. We will research, explore, and document modern Jamaican life and culture, including language, history, society, and ecology through the lens of travel journalism and videography. Service Learning will help us  make the most of our study abroad experience by familiarizing us with the culture of our host country, enabling us to create lasting bonds with the people we meet across Jamaica, and being able to contribute in our cultural exchange.

Your donations will help us defray the  costs to study abroad, making it accessible to more students at Lincoln.

We thank you in advance for your support!
