Hello, my name is Lilybeth Hernandez. I'm
20 years old and live in East Los Angeles. I have the opportunity to attend New
York University this Fall to study Global Public Health with a focus on Food
Studies.
I was accepted last year but had to defer my enrollment because I don't have the tuition. It wasn't an ideal situation, as I would learn while researching scholarships, loans, grants, and fellowships and coming up empty. Deferred Status creates a loop. Because I'm neither a high school student or first year college student, I'm ineligible to apply to a majority of scholarships and grants. I have no credit history and my family doesn't meet certain requirements, so loans have been denied. But despite these circumstances, it's a decision I stand behind and in hindsight beneficial in so many ways. A few years ago, Public Health wasn't even a consideration. "Health" to me meant doctors and nurses and this is from someone who has a genetic condition because of gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina, a metabolic disorder. This past year has been crucial to my development; the experience of working as a community liaison for Public Matters and the UCLA-USC Center for Population Health and Health Disparities addressing healthy food access and awareness has become the foundation for what I want to study and eventually do with my life.
I know this field I want to study and work in will be challenging. New York City and NYU will be challenging. And I'm excited. I'm so curious about what it's like to live on the East Coast and have seasons, where I might get my morning cup of coffee, how long it will take to get from one building to another. I want to be at NYU. It's where I need to be. But I'm going to need help getting there.
