Light and Hope for the Bahamas

Hurricane Dorian has left the Bahamian Archipelago facing a dire humanitarian crisis. 185mph winds ripped through homes and infrastructure, leaving most of the islands totally destroyed.

To those living in the affected communities, trying to make it has become harder than ever, as they struggle in the pursuit of physical and emotional safety and securing their good health. For this, access to light is crucial. Light gives people hope, combating despair and loneliness while providing physical safety and security. Without light, hope that better days will come is slowly dimming a way for thousands of Bahamians.

Everyone is facing intense heat and humidity, and flooded standing water covers their surroundings. For many, this is the scenario they must live through with only one set of clothes. In the humanitarian crisis that the Bahamian Archipelago is facing, having clean clothes isn't a commodity, it's a public health issue. Access to clean clothes doesn't only improve people's states of mind; it prevents illness and disease. Humid and dirty clothes become breeding grounds for all types of pathogens.

Light and Hope for The Bahamas seeks to attend the needs of the public health crises that the Archipelago is facing by distributing solar lamps and hand-powered washing machines to the most affected and vulnerable communities around the islands.

For $100, you can provide two solar lamps and a non-electric portable washing solution for a Bahamian family in need.

Who is behind this campaign? The campaign is spearheaded by 17-year-old Salvador Gómez-Colón, who founded Light and Hope for Puerto Rico as a response to the devastation caused by Hurricanes María and Irma. For his efforts in Puerto Rico, he was recognized as one of Time Magazine's Most Influential Teens of 2017, a Recipient of the President's Environmental Youth Award, and a 2019 Princess Diana Award.
