Lifesaving PPE for NHS staff

The Covid-19 outbreak is unprecedented, one that we have never seen and most probably will never see again in our generation. Doctors and nurses are leading the fight in a war with an enemy we don’t yet fully understand.

We are a group of university academics and medical doctors (Dr Mingru Sun at Birmingham City University, Dr Chen Yuan at University of Birmingham, Ms Zhong Zheng at University of Warwick, Dr Mengshi Yuan - Cardiology registrar at Birmingham City Hospital, Dr Shahiba Begum - Opthalmology registrar at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre and Dr Ashish Patel - Paediatric registrar at The Princess Royal Hospital ) and we set up this initiative to source PPE for NHS frontline staff who are in desperate need of help.

Currently, frontline healthcare workers are caring for COVID19 patients with insufficient protection, and they are already running out of basic things such as masks, gowns and visors. The current situation has become so dire that some of doctors have resorted to using bin bags for protection, it feels like they are being sent to war without proper armour and protection.  Better PPE is the only way to minimise frontline healthcare workers from contracting COVID-19, so that not only will they be able to continue to care for those in need, but also not become a vector to infect the most vulnerable patients that they care for. 

So far, we have already spent £5,175 on 275 EN regulated, CE certified hazmat suits and 540 visors to give to those who are at the forefront of this war. In the meantime, We have also backordered more CE certified hazmat suits which are validated by University Hospital Birmingham Procurement Department. With the number of cases continuing to rise, it is likely NHS frontline staff will need a great deal more before the situation is under control. Please help us to get more lifesaving PPE for them, to help you and your loved ones.
