Life Changing Surgery for Geovanni

Please, take a moment to meet Geovanni Isabel. Geovanni is a very special 11 year old girl. Geovanni was born with a congenital heart defect called Truncus Arteriosis. She was also born with DiGeorge syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome), a disorder caused when a small part of chromosome 22 is missing. In addition to Truncus Arteriosis, she suffers from pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in her lungs and the right side of her heart. Geovanni is also afflicted with distal pulmonary artery stenosis, a narrowing of the pulmonary arteries. This condition is similar to children who are diagnosed withTetralogy of Fallot.
At just four days old, Geovanni endured her first open heart surgery. Geovanni’s heart was repaired and made whole. Her parents were ready to embark on the beautiful journey of watching her grow. As fate would have it, at less than one month old, the repair to Geovanni’s heart failed and she had to endure her second life-saving open-heart surgery.
Over the following months and years, Geovanni would undergo another open-heart surgery and seven Cardiac Catheterizations. With each procedure, Geovanni’s doctor would work to help her heart keep up with her growth. During the open-heart surgery she received at age 4, she was given a Contegra Conduit and her doctor enlarged the branch of the left pulmonary artery of her heart. They have not been able to work safely on the branch of the right pulmonary artery. This has been her journey since birth.
However, this has all changed with Geovanni’s 7th Cardiac Catheterization this past June 2018. She has been referred to a doctor in California to perform a procedure that is as much “life-changing” as it is “life-saving.” The procedure, Unifocalization Cardiac Surgery, is entirely unique and performed only by this one surgeon, world wide, in California. Geovanni will have to travel from New York for this surgery.
The urgency of this surgery could not come at a more crucial time. Geovanni is experiencing Arrhythmias accompanied with any type of physical activity. Without this surgery, she will not be able to live a normal life. She will not be able to play sports or simply go for a run. Eventually, her heart will fail her and her parents will be told there is nothing more that can be done for her. No child should have to hear such a bleak prognosis. No parent should have to endure that grief.
We humbly appeal to you for support. While insurance will cover some expenses to allow Geovanni this opportunity, it will not cover everything. Geovanni’s father and younger sister wish to accompany her and her mother along this journey. In addition, Geovanni’s mother, Lisa, has only recently started a new job. It was a job that she had long waited for. She is facing the possibility of having to resign. The date for Geovanni’s surgery is the end of September 2018 and Lisa will not qualify for the Family Medical Leave Act by that time. We implore you for your assistance, to keep this family together and help support them in this great time of need.
