My name is Keeley. I am a teacher at Chellow Heights Special School. I teach some of the most wonderful children and I work with the most amazing families. In my spare time I work with the Friends of Queensbury High Street to litter pick. I am very passionate about both roles.
Chellow Heights Special School caters for children between the ages of 2 to 11 who have a wide range of additional needs, both physical, medical and emotional. Many of the children who attend are pre-verbal and use photographs and/ or symbols to communicate.i
Last year I undertook a research and development project. I attended the ACE centre in Manchester and received training on how to make symbol communication books. So far over 20 children at the school have a symbol communication book. The books have given them a voice which their families, friends and teachers can hear.
Unfortunately the books are costly to make due to the mount of materials needed. They also need to be replaced frequently as the children use them on a daily basis. Most books have the ‘well loved’ look after a few weeks! With the on going budget cuts to school it is becoming harder to find the money to buy the materials needed. I have made it my mission to make the communication books sustainable. I aim to find a way to fund the books so that each child that needs a book can have one! Our children deserve a voice.
I was brainstorming fundraising ideas but wanted to create something a bit more original than a cake sale, sponsored run or sponsored silence. If you know me, that latter is impossible!
My plan is to litter pick for an hour for each £10 donation I receive. I may do this alone or as part of a group. This will not only fund the communication books but it will help keep our city cleaner! A before and after photo will be posted on social media. Every penny of money raised goes directly to Chellow Hearts, the school’s charity.
