Bright is my 5yr old boy with congenital glaucoma, living with his parents in Accra and he is unable to see in both eyes. The hospital (Korle Bu) where he was born, detected this condition soon after delivery and at 6 weeks old, he had his first glaucoma surgery in both eyes. He has since been on medication to help reduce the eye pressure before any further treatment can continue but the pressure is still high.
Bright was taken to a private eye clinic for a second opinion and he was diagnosed with Corneal opacity, Staphyloma and Nystagmus in both eyes. He has hence been referred to India to undergo the Ahmed Valve surgery which cannot be done in Ghana.
His vision was better but the condition has deteriorated over the last few years and currently he’s only able to follow light and can barely see. If we don’t act fast enough, he will permanently lose his sight. Time is not on our side at all.
It will cost about $14,500 to take Bright to India, get surgery done and bring him safely back home. His parents cannot afford this huge amount. We are therefore appealing to all you good people to support us restore Bright’s sight and then he can start school. He’s always crying and asking to be taken to school.
Bright needs our help urgently.
