Let America Be America Again Film Project

Hi everyone, My name is Omar Lopez Thismon, I am a filmmaker and someone who prides himself of being a vocal activist for the rights and freedoms of all people, especially as it relates to historically marginalized groups in the United States. I am here to tell you about a film idea that has been on my heart and mind for years. Langston Hughes authored a poem in 1935 titled “Let America Be America Again .” I know, super relevant title huh? In that poem, Hughes talks in descriptive and visual language about how this country hasn’t lived up to its creed. He speaks about Black people, poor people, the greed of the wealthy and powerful, Immigrants, Indigenous people and more. It's a powerful piece of writing and one that is just as relevant today, as it was in 1935. 


I am here to tell you that I am creating a film with this poem as the foundation of it. The poem will serve as the narration of the film and the film will portray common lived experiences of marginalized and disenfranchised groups of people in this country along with archival footage to reinforce the narrative. 

We hope that this film will serve as an inspiration to people to get involved, make their voices heard, and hold America accountable for what it has promised. That is why we are planning to release this film on October 30th, 5 days before the election. Our hope is that this film will gain traction and not only motivated people in the short term to vote but can spark activism in many who currently feel apathy.
