Leo's Top Surgery

Hello!

My name is Leo Sanchez and I am a 19-year-old transgender man. I was born and raised on the West side of Chicago by a family that has continually loved and supported me throughout my entire transition. Currently, I am a first-year student at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign studying Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education.

So, what does it mean to be transgender? Quite simply, it means that I am a man that was not born in a male body. My chest is not as flat as most cisgender men, which does not allow me to feel comfortable in my own skin. Often, it makes me feel like I am not “man enough.”  For the past two years, I have been living in a body that made me feel ashamed whenever I looked in the mirror. In order to suppress my body dysphoria, I wear a chest binder, which is a tight-fitting vest that squeezes my chest. This vest makes my chest appear flatter and more masculine. While my binder allows me to feel comfortable in my own skin; it is actually pretty painful to wear. Therefore, I am having what is commonly known as FTM top surgery on May 4, 2018. The official medical name  for this surgery is Double Incision Bilateral Mastectomy. The goal of this surgery is to reconstruct my chest, giving it a more more masculine appearance. I will no longer have to endure the pain of wearing a chest binder and I can finally feel confident about who I see in the mirror. This surgery would rid me of a literal and figurative weight off my chest and I could not be more excited for it.

Unfortunately, surgery is not cheap, which is why I have created this description for a GoFundMe. After calculating all possible costs, the amount of money needed for surgery, as well as post-operative care, is $6,246. GoFundMe collects $188 for transaction fees, so, the grand total comes out to $6,436. I have been saving up for this surgery for the past year, but as a college student, it has been difficult to continue saving while having to pay for school fees, tuition, etc. I am reaching out to everyone in hopes that people can assist me in reaching my monetary goal. Anything and everything is appreciated as this surgery will finally free me of the mental and physical weight that I have dealt with for years.
