Legs for Life - Keep Krista mobile!
Krista was recently diagnosed with Lipedema , a degenerative condition which could eventually result in her losing the ability to walk. This disease affects only women, is usually triggered by a hormonal shift (like puberty or pregnancy), and no amount of diet or lifestyle change can reverse it.
Perhaps because of our society's tendency for fat-shaming, the disease is not widely recognized in Canada. The only successful treatment for this disease so far is a specialized liposuction offered only a few places in the world.
The pioneer of this surgery is Dr. Frank Stutz, formerly a medical surgeon (not cosmetic) who recognized the disease and its lack of available treatment. He has trained several others in the US and UK, but his rates remain the most economical.
Krista was fortunate to have been able to secure a cancellation spot - otherwise Dr. Stutz is booked into 2020!
In April, Krista will be flying to Germany for 3 surgeries (spaced out over 6 weeks so her circulatory system doesn't go into shock). As of right now, her mother is planning to delay retirement to help care for her during those 6 weeks.
Our insurance will not cover any of the costs, and so we're looking at 15,000 Euro (25,000CAD) for the surgeries alone, plus the cost of accomodation and transportation while she is in Germany (an estimated additional 10,000CAD).
Krista wants to remain active - to run and bike with our boys, to perform in theatre, to teach - and without this surgery, she could lose the ability to do all of these things.
