Legal Fund for Immigrant Minors

Tax deductible
The Carolyn E. Wylie Center for Children, Youth, and Families is raising funds to assist in the ongoing crisis of unaccompanied minors who are crossing the border to escape violence in their home countries. Since 2014, more than 163,000 children have been detained at the Mexican/U.S. border; 54,000 of those children were detained this year alone. Upon their detainment, these children are charged with violating U.S. immigration law, which is a civil offense, and many are expected to represent themselves in front of an immigration court judge. These children are not given access to any legal help, and they need it.

Many of these children, whether they are detained at the border or living in the shadows in the United States, could be safe under a special law signed by President Obama in 2008. This special law grants undocumented minors “Special Immigrant Juvenile Status,” more commonly referred to as SIJS, which enables these children to qualify for a green card. In order to be granted SIJS, those children detained at the border must first make it out of immigration court and into the custody of a legal guardian. They must appear in court again, outside of their immigration proceedings, and have an attorney ask the judge to grant SIJS to the minor. This process is long and complex, and only accredited attorneys can help these minors.

Riverside County and San Bernardino County are home to many of these unaccompanied, undocumented minors, and we must do what we can to help them overcome these legal hurdles. These children have escaped severe poverty, gang violence and crime, and have experienced hardship that no child should be subjected to. Help us give them the opportunity for the safe and happy life that all children should have.

In collaboration with the Immigration Law Offices of Hadley Bajramovic PC, the Carolyn E. Wylie Center’s special fund will cover the legal costs and fees for children seeking SIJS. All monies raised through this campaign will be restricted for that use only.  The Immigration Law Offices of Hadley Bajramovic PC will coordinate these cases and their legal representation.
