Supporting Nasser Najjar’s Family (Longterm support)

Hi, my name is Emily Best and I am a musician and journalist in Vancouver raising funds for my friend Nasser to help him evacuate his family from Gaza.

Nasser is a Canadian citizen originally from Gaza, and is in urgent need of financial assistance to get his family out safely.

His father needed heart surgery recently under the siege, and with all of the hospitals unusable, he was treated in a clinic with very little of the necessary equipment needed.

His father has since fallen ill due to infection since losing their family home and needs to leave Gaza immediately (as most people do because they are experiencing unthinkable violence, a major health crisis and have no food).

His youngest niece, Jodi, is facing clinical starvation as of this week (April 6).

Nasser has been working tirelessly for months to evacuate his family, speaking to every political leader he can, writing letters and advocating, all while being a new dad and surviving in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

The rules are oppressively discriminatory towards Palestinians in Canada in contrast to other immigration policies and his family should be here with us today. The next best thing we can do is help Nasser pay for their immediate evacuation across the border.

Nasser is very possibly the sweetest and most vibrant person I’ve ever met and I am incredibly grateful to be able to help him in some small way during this unthinkably devastating time.

Myself, along with our small group of friends have been organizing events throughout the city to bolster our fundraising efforts.

What seemed impossible when we realized we had no other options to evacuate his family by hiring a broker (in lieu of Canada’s diplomatic responsibilities to protect innocent civilians and their families trapped in a war zone), has now become possible thanks to so many generous donors in our community.

We held an event last Sunday that pulled in over $12K and included a silent auction, live dj dance party, 50/50 and more. This could not have been possible without our community, donors, and everyone who has stepped up to help us along the way.

These funds, combined with a number of other initiatives between us and other community members stepping up to support our friend have raised us close to $70K in less than one month which are essential in our efforts to evacuate his family.

With costs for evacuation being over $10K USD per person, you can imagine we still have a long way to go.

The support will be needed long after they evacuate, and we are with him for the long haul as he fights for his family’s survival.

Please advocate and speak up to your government officials. Please tell Canada to stop selling weapons to Israel and fueling more violence. Please tell Canada to stop allowing the slaughter of its citizens and their family members overseas in Gaza.
