Soy Róisín. Estoy viajando por Sudamérica en mi furgoneta (https://www.linguaram.com/blog), una casa rodante, y durante el viaje imparto talleres de lectura para niños en escuelas.

Creo que la lectura es una fuente de riqueza infinita que abre muchas puertas. Por eso, los objetivos del taller son fomentar que los niños lean y promocionar el aprendizaje de idiomas a través de los libros.

Aquí estamos mi furgoneta y yo en Nicaragua:

¿A quién va dirigido el taller?

A niños matriculados en educación primaria, porque pienso que si integran la lectura en sus vidas desde niños, se beneficiarán tanto del placer de la lectura, como de mayores oportunidades en términos de educación y empleo. El tipo de colegios serán escuelas rurales, empezando por Colombia, que es donde estoy actualmente, para después seguir impartiendo el taller en otros países de Sudamérica. La razón de elegir escuelas rurales es porque creo que a menudo tienen menos acceso a materiales escolares y libros en idiomas extranjeros que muchas escuelas en zonas urbanas. También porque el hecho de contar con un vehículo y vivir en él me permite desplazarme hasta zonas remotas.

¿Por qué necesito tu apoyo?

Las donaciones de esta campaña las usaré para comprar cuentos y libros infantiles que donaré a las escuelas rurales, para que pasen a formar parte de la biblioteca escolar y los niños puedan acceder a ellos cuando quieran. Toda donación supone un gran apoyo y será muy apreciada, y todo el que quiera podrá seguir el avance del proyecto en el blog de mi página web www.linguaram.com y en mis redes sociales, donde publicaré actualizaciones. Los libros son relativamente baratos, así que las donaciones servirán sobre todo para hacer durar el proyecto en el tiempo. Cuantas más donaciones, más libros podré llevar a más escuelas.

¿En qué consiste el taller?

El taller se impartirá en las aulas de primaria de escuelas y tendrá dos objetivos: fomentar el amor por la lectura y utilizar cuentos infantiles para aprender inglés.

Usaremos los libros infantiles de la editorial Oxf. Reading Tree durante el taller, puesto que son una serie de muchas historias con muy buenas ilustraciones dirigidas específicamente al aprendizaje de la lectura. Estos libros los tengo y los llevaré conmigo a cada una de las escuelas en las que imparta el taller.

El taller constará de 5 etapas:

1- Lectura en voz alta: primero, yo les leeré a los niños un cuento infantil ilustrado y les pediré que, prestando atención a las ilustraciones, hablen sobre la trama de la historia y predigan lo que va a ocurrir.

2-Escritura: una vez haya leído la historia y los niños hayan tenido tiempo de hacer preguntas sobre los personajes y la trama, haremos algunas actividades sencillas de escritura, dependiendo de la edad y el nivel de idioma de los alumnos. Podría ser algo tan sencillo como dibujar a su personaje favorito o escribir una frase que diga quién es o qué está haciendo.

3- Lectura en grupo: en grupos de 3 o 4, leerán juntos otro cuento de la misma serie mientras yo les superviso y les apoyo.

4- Actividad creativa: todos los alumnos, con mi apoyo, trabajarán en conjunto para inventar una nueva historia.

5 - Intercambio de cartas: a los grupos de la edad correspondiente, les entregaré cartas escritas por niños españoles y les ayudaré a responder a estos mensajes, para hacerles descubrir las diferentes puertas que pueden abrir la escritura y la lectura y para fomentar el intercambio cultural.

El taller acabará con la entrega a la escuela de los libros infantiles que podré comprar gracias a vuestras donaciones.

¿Cómo surge la idea?

La idea del taller de lectura surge durante mi viaje en velero y furgoneta, que comenzó en 2019 y sobre el que podéis leer aquí: https://www.linguaram.com/post/sobre-olas-y-ruedas

Desde niña, estuve rodeada de libros: mis padres fueron profesores, por lo que los cuentos y los libros infantiles fueron una gran parte de mi infancia: esas historias, sus personajes, ilustraciones y aventuras me aportaron valores y enseñanzas que influenciaron mucho mi visión del mundo. Durante mi recorrido por el Caribe y América Latina, he observado que muchos niños tienen muy poco acceso a los libros y que incluso los sistemas educativos a menudo no promueven el aprendizaje de la lectura como una herramienta clave para el desarrollo de los niños. Por eso, desde hace más de un año, tengo siempre en mi furgoneta algunos cuentos infantiles que voy regalando a los niños que conozco por el camino. Ahora me gustaría dar un paso más y hacerlo de una manera más estructurada, con la esperanza de tener un impacto positivo en las vidas de las niñas y los niños cuyas escuelas visitaré.

¿Por qué la lectura?

ENSEÑA COMUNICACIÓN - El niño que lee conoce el uso del lenguaje, se expresa más eficazmente que el el niño que no lee y por ende se comunica mejor.
DESPIERTA LA CURIOSIDAD - La lectura es una ventana por la que asomarnos a mundos, lugares y culturas diferentes. Conocer otras realidades fomenta la curiosidad, expande los horizontes mentales y nos permite pensarnos capaces de hacer cosas que sobrepasan los límites impuestos por la sociedad.
DESARROLLA LA IMAGINACIÓN - Los cuentos presentan mundos fantásticos y mágicos cuyas normas, personajes y estructuras alejadas del mundo real fomentan la imaginación y la creatividad de los niños que, al crecer, se convierten en adultos capaces de enfrentarse a la vida con perspectivas innovadoras.
OFRECE TIEMPO DE RELAJACIÓN - Los libros, al estar hechos de papel, un material natural, relajan la mente (al contrario que las pantallas) y distraen de las realidades cotidianas.
AUMENTA LA CAPACIDAD DE CONCENTRACIÓN - A largo plazo, la lectura fortalece la capacidad de compromiso y concentración de los niños, porque leer una novela, por ejemplo, requiere cierta dedicación y capacidad de atención durante un tiempo relativamente largo.
REFUERZA LAS DOTES DE ESCRITURA: casi todos, en algún punto, tenemos que redactar un email, escribir un currículum, rellenar un formulario o solicitar por escrito una reunión o un puesto de trabajo. Haber sido lector desde niño supone una gran ventaja a la hora de redactar un texto en cualquier formato.

My name is Róisín. As I travel through South America in my van (https://www.linguaram.com/blog) I run reading workshops for schoolchildren. I think that books are infinitely enriching and that they offer countless opportunities. That is why the aims of the workshop are to encourage children to read and to promote language learning through books.

Who is the workshop for?

For primary school children, because I think that if they start to read as children, they will continue to do so as teenagers and adults and they will benefit from the pleasure afforded by books as well as greatly enhanced opportunities in terms of access to education and employment. The schools will be in rural areas, in Colombia to start off because that is where I am currently; later I will visit schools in other South American countries. The reason for choosing to visit rural schools is because I think they often have less access to school supplies and books in foreign languages than many city schools. Also because owning a vehicle and living in it allows me go to remote areas.

Why do I need your support?

I will use the donations to purchase storybooks and children's books to donate to the rural schools I visit, so that they can become part of the school library and available for children to use whenever they want. Every donation is meaningful and I will greatly appreciate it. Books are quite cheap, so the donations will mainly determine how long the project lasts. The more donations received, the more books I will be able to take to more schools.

What does the workshop look like?

It is held in the classrooms of primary schools and it has two objectives: to encourage children to read and to use storybooks to learn English. During the workshop, we will use the Oxf. Reading Tree series of children's books, because they are a well-illustrated series of many different stories that have the specific aim of teaching children to read. I have these books and I will take them with me to each of the schools I visit.

The workshop will be structured as follows:

1 - Storytelling: first, I will read an illustrated story to the children and engage them by drawing attention to the pictures and asking them to predict what the story is about and what they think will happen.

2 - Writing: when I have read the story and the children have had time to ask questions about the characters and the plot, we will do some basic written work on the story, depending on the age and language ability of each group. This could be something as basic as drawing a picture of their favourite character in the story and writing a sentence saying who she/he is or what they are doing.

3 - Reading in groups: following this, the children will read a different story together in groups of 3 or 4 while I circulate and help where necessary.

4 - Creative activity: the entire group will work together, with my support, to create a new story.

5 - Letters: when I run the workshop with groups of the corresponding age, I will give them letters written by Spanish children and help them to write a response, with the aim of showing them the many opportunities offered by reading and writing and encouraging cultural exchange.

The workshop ends with the donation to the school of the children's books I will purchase thanks to your donations.

How did the idea arise?

The idea for the reading workshop occurred to me during my sailing and driving trip, which began in 2019 and which you can read about here: https://www.linguaram.com/post/by-sail-on-wheels-english

Since I was a child, I was surrounded by books: my parents were teachers, so stories and children's books were an important part of my childhood. Those stories, their characters, illustrations and adventures taught me values and lessons that had a great influence on my worldview. As I travelled across the Caribbean and Latin America, I noticed that many children have very limited access to books and that even education systems often don't encourage reading as a key tool for children’s development. That is why, for the past year, I always have some children's books in my van that I give to the children I meet along the way. Now I would like to take this further, do it in a more structured way and hopefully have a positive impact on the lives of the children whose schools I visit.

Why reading?

IT TEACHES COMMUNICATION - Children who read understand how to use language, they express themselves more efficiently than children who don't read and therefore are better at communicating.
IT AWAKENS CURIOSITY - Reading is a doorway to different worlds, places and cultures. Being exposed to realities different from our own stimulates our curiosity and expands our horizons, allowing us to think ourselves capable of things beyond the limits imposed on us by society.
IT FOSTERS THE IMAGINATION - Storybooks present magical fantasy worlds, the rules, characters and structures of which, so distant from the real world, develop the creativity and imagination of children who grow up to become adults who are able to face life's obstacles creatively.
IT OFFERS RELAXING TIMES - Books distract us from the realities of everyday life and, because they are made of paper, a natural material, they also relax the mind, on the contrary of screens.
IT IMPROVES THE ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE - In the long term, reading bolsters children's ability to commit and concentrate because reading a novel, for example, requires a certain level of dedication and the ability to focus for quite a long time.
IT REINFORCES WRITING SKILLS - At some point, almost all of us need to write an email, a C.V., fill out a form, request a meeting or apply for a job in writing. Having read as a child is a definite advantage when drafting a text in any format.
