Leanne Venables-Join the Fight

Donation protected
To say Leanne Venables is a fighter is an understatement and to say what she is about to face is going to be tough..... is also an understatement.

Leanne has in the past, been treated for NON Hodgkin Lymphoma stage 4 and this has now progressed to Myelodysplasia.

There is unfortunately no current cure for Myelodysplasia other than a stem cell transplant - a transplant that only 300 people a year have in Australia.

Leanne was not able to produce her own stem cells, and as a result, is having to rely on a stem cell donor.  This is called an Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant or Bone Marrow Transplant.

A snapshot of Leanne's treatment:

She will be required to undergo many medical tests including a bone marrow biopsy , and then 8 days of intensive Chemotherapy followed by the transplant.

Leanne will be in the isolation ward at Royal Melbourne Hospital for a minimum of one month with limited visitors, and then close supervision 24 hours a day for another 60 days.

In the 60 day period she (& a carer) will be required to stay within 30 minutes of the Royal Melbourne Hospital in case of urgent medical care, (due to critial infections) being required.

Leanne will also need to attend out patient clinics on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays for blood tests  and follow up consults with her medical team.

Just for these out patient appointments, 48 trips will be required, totalling 7680km of travelling!  This comes at a cost to the family as well as friends assisting at the time.  The Go Fund Me Page will help to cover the families & volunteers costs of fuel, E Tag expenses and CBD carparking......

Because  Leanne and her family do not live close to Royal Melbourne Hospital they don't qualify for subsidised housing through the Leukemia foundation and they are too far out from Royal Melbourne Hospital to get home care from them or Peter Mac's in home  services.  What this means is the family will also need to pay for accommodation costs to stay as a non-subsidised patients at the Leukeamia Foundation.

Those who know Leanne, understand the tenacity she approaches everything with and fighting this illness will be no different.  She remains positive, and keeps that fun loving attitude and beautiful smile on her face despite what is ahead.

She is a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, volunteer and all round wonderful human being.  She has been awarded 20 years service as a Scout Leader, 12 years service in the CFA in Victoria and was part of an AV Team that was awarded an educational award for VCAL teaching.

She is always the first to offer help and get involved and now it's our turn.

Let's give back to Leanne, join her in this fight and kick the illness to the kerb!
