Lawyer Up Lexi
Don protégé
Help us raise funds for Lexi to pay for legal representation against her abuser.
Lexi is currently in court trying to retain custody of her daughter against her ex, who was physically, verbally, emotionally and sexually abusive. He is represented in court by a member of the Indiana State Senate, while Lexi has no legal representation and a server's income, putting the cost of an attorney out of her reach. She has applied for assistance from Indiana Legal Services, a pro-bono organization for low-income clients, but was told their case load is currently too heavy to take on any new clients.
Lexi has an active protective order against her abuser, and visits are currently supervised. Her goal is not to keep him away from her daughter, only to make sure that visitation happens in a safe environment. Her abuser is pushing for unsupervised visitation, including overnight stays.
Everything that has happened so far in this case has involved Lexi presenting her own evidence of abuse to the court, a process that has been emotionally taxing and re-traumatizing.
We are raising funds to retain the services of an attorney to help sort through the evidence and represent Lexi in court to keep her child safe.
It is difficult to predict how much this process will cost between the retainer fee, billable hours, and any associated court costs. In order to keep things transparent, we will post an update any time funds raised here are spent. Any funds raised beyond the amount necessary to pay for an attorney will be donated to the following organizations, each of which plays an important role in allowing victims to leave their abusers:
- Indiana Legal Services, which provides pro-bono legal assistance to low-income families and individuals
- A Better Way, which provides shelter and other support services to victims of domestic violence
- Muncie YWCA, which provides short-term emergency shelter to women in dangerous situations
- Bridges Community Services, which provides housing-first assistance to homeless individuals. For many victims, fear of homelessness is a main reason for staying in abusive relationships.
With your help, we can secure Lexi the legal assistance she needs and the safety she and her daughter deserve.
