Laurel Hilbert—the visually impaired founder of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit A Dignified Home—is running the entire San Francisco Marathon on July 29, accompanied by ADH board member Chad Upham and Laurel’s service dog, Aero.
Laurel, who himself was homeless, is doing this to not only demonstrate that nothing is impossible and that challenges are there to be overcome, but also to raise $10,000 in much-needed seed money to help his new nonprofit move forward in its mission …

At age 21, Laurel Hilbert founded A Dignified Home because he knows firsthand the fear-tainted hopelessness of living alone on the street …
Likewise, having suffered the painful confusion of bouncing from one unstable living situation to another—relegated to a state of demoralizing disposability—he understands at his core—and supremely cherishes—the life-changing gift of a safe, serene and permanent place to call home …
As a visually impaired Syrian immigrant who came to the United States at age 17 hoping to attend school, Laurel’s journey was formidable from the onset. Knowing no English, he fended his way through a maze of challenges, ultimately finding a contented place where he was then able to move his life forward …
And that’s why Laurel started A Dignified Home—to spare others those pains and to nurture the dormant potential in young people who desperately need a stable, secure and sustainable environment in order to grow & thrive.

Turning the trauma of his personal experiences being homeless around to a positive, Laurel has embarked on creating a place where homeless young people will not have to worry about being asked to leave on a moment’s notice because the location is not sustainable, or because of a funding model dependent on outside grants limits the amount of time they can stay.
The mission of A Dignified Home is different—to foster and facilitate healthy personal growth for marginalized young people through a proactive philosophy that’s rooted in permanence and driven by a true belief in each individual’s unique potential to blossom and succeed …

FUNDING
As A Dignified Home moves forward developing its 5-year Strategic Plan, seed money is greatly needed for the first phase of implementation. Our goal is $10,000. Your contributions will help offset initial administrative costs as we embark on the journey of creating a safe, sustainable and permanent home for young people at risk.
