She should have died when she was hit by a car in Rishikesh. She should have died under surgery when she was sterilized. She should have died when we intervened and did an emergency surgery on her bloated abdomen. She should have died from her chronic diarrhea. She should have died when her immune system became infected. She shouldn’t be alive.
But she is. Nikki is a survivor. She had survived her whole life. Born into unthinkable circumstances Nikki grabbed our attention when we noticed her on a busy Indian road. She was malnourished, without love, and alone. Most dogs in Rishikesh die before they ever reach 4. That’s the average lifespan of a street dogs IF they make it past puppyhood. If it’s not parvo killing them it’s distemper, if it’s not a disease it’s starvation. If it’s not starvation it’s from festering open wounds.
Nikki, by some stroke of luck, has survived all of those things. She had been saved, in the most terrible of conditions and told us she wants to live. She wants to live to run, to play, to smell, and to eat. She loves all of the above.
We at KAT have accepted the responsibility of her life and ask for our followers in return to believe in her too. We have started a fundraiser to get her to a better life.
Nikki suffers from an undiagnosed illness that we have managed with minimal resources. With all the time spent we feel it is our duty to attempt to find her a better life. Our idea is to bring Nikki to Lake Tahoe, California where she might find some owner who is willing to give her daily medication. Although inexpensive this kind of treatment is impossible on the streets of Rishikesh. India demands that the inhabitants be survivors on their own, with minimal human intervention.
If our campaign is successful we will fly her to the states on Feburary 28th. If we are not successful, we won't have many options left. The last thing we want to do is feel that we have done everything we could and it's still not enough.
