Sometimes Miracles Need Help

Our dad, Larry, was walking on the beach in Punta Mita, Mexico when he felt pain in his chest. Thankfully, his wife Marcia took him to the hospital where hours later he suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Doctors spent 60 minutes performing CPR to save Larry’s life. During this lifesaving process, twelve of Dad’s ribs were broken and his lungs were punctured. But they brought him back to life.

While his life was spared, he has a long road to recovery. Within days of the attack, our dad needed an emergency quadruple bypass heart surgery in order to survive. A team was brought in from Guadalajara to perform the extensive procedure. The surgery was deemed a success, but Dad is still facing many hurdles in the healing process.

After eighteen days in the ICU in Puerto Vallarta, Larry was finally diagnosed as stable enough to be medevaced back to the United States. Larry had an extended coverage through his medical insurance that would cover international care, however, he was not aware that it had a maximum lifetime payout of only $50,000.

With the quadruple bypass surgery, 18 days of critical care in the ICU, multiple small surgeries to keep him alive, and the medevac home to California, Larry’s medical bills now exceed $175,000. 

One of our Dad’s favorite movies is 'It’s a Wonderful Life', a tale that reminds us that things of true worth are measured in the currency of friendship and family, along with the good karma one puts out into the world. Dad’s doctors in Mexico called him a miracle.
