In a previous editorial for my small town paper I discussed how to live in a time of disease, I offered some suggestions about how to endure. I mentioned we were going into a desert. We would see when, and how, we would emerge.
Little did I know, my own personal desert would be profound and real. One Sunday evening at 4:30, I was gazing out my front window. At 5:30 I could no longer stand up at all.
Monday, May 11, I was in surgery. It seems I came out of it well enough. There will be more work, but improvement will occur.
The cause was a cancerous growth on my spine.
The good news is it is small, very treatable, with a survival expectation of ten years or more. The treatment is low level radiation. No chemotherapy. The recovery work has begun...
As I sit in bed, I can hear violent demonstrations from 38 and Chicago three blocks away. After the murder of George Floyd. The sky is ablaze. I’m on the ground floor. HVAC crews from national guard are making sure ventilation won’t suck in tear gas . I’m curious about security. So, the desert persists in this astonishing time. Even in illness I’m in the middle of things, like it or not.
My hope is that we can become a more loving world. I have little faith that is what will happen, but I commit to that goal.
They just locked down the hospital tonight so it gets even more interesting! Armored personal carriers just emptied troops to guard the perimeter...
As it has turned out, the past five nights have had helicopter searchlights sweeping the courtyard outside my windows constant sirens, and armored personnel carriers each night with National Guard troops. No visitors. Total isolation going on three weeks here. Thanks

The world is changing but my world isn’t; four walls, therapy, a poem written everyday to help me heal and remember events.
I’m in charge, as you are, of our own wellness. Strength and self-reliance will see me through not resilience, not grit. We must recognize our own originality and grace, it is that we tap into, the genius of self. That saves and heals us. We are all originals. Discover the essence. Discover what makes you, you .
Actually , it is a real good story. June 19 was my discharge date, but progress is being made so the 26 looks more likely. Seven and one half weeks of isolation with five days of civil unrest tossed to put an edge on reality.
If you get this email it is because I care about you love you, and want you to know what happened. Of course Patty and I are social distancing like crazy. Hug someone you love!
There is a go fund me page. Because seven and a half weeks in hospital offers some financial challenges.
