Education is the key and our demonstration garden here in Salavan is an example of how it successfuly works.
At present most farmers use chemicals and quite often too much is applied or the wrong kind is applied. Also their production is low because they only know one way to grow crops.
Last year in the province next to ours we visited 6 organic farmers. They all have seen an increase in their crops and income and two are now exporting to Thailand. So we know it works. It is sustainable.
Of course there will be those who will wait and see how others are doing it before changing their methods.
In the photo you will see the staff and volunteers from the Agriculture Department in Southern Laos working at their Salavan Organic farming demonstration plot. They want to teach and train local farmers in all districts of Salavan Province on how to grow and protect Organic Vegetable crops. They have worked very hard on this demonstration plot, and now they want to teach and train16 agriculture technicians from 8 districts who will then present the same Organic Farming workshops in their local districts to the farmers.
We need funding in order to accommodate, feed, teach and train the technicians as well as supply them with presentation Tool Kits and pictorial and written booklets for the district farmers.
I am an Australian Volunteer helping these people improve their agricutlure practices and thus hopefully increase the farmers' incomes and health.
Please help us. Thank you.
