My name is Lansana Mansaray and I have stage 4 cancer.
A number of years ago I was lucky enough to be granted asylum in Canada. I am originally from Sierra Leone and have been fortunate to have left behind violence, extreme poverty and disease, and make a new life for me and my children in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Life has been a struggle while trying to establish myself in a new country. I have always been willing to take on any job in order to support my family, however now due to my medical condition, I am no longer able to work.
Last fall, I was given some shocking news and now face the biggest challenge of my life. I am battling a rare form of Throat Cancer - Hyalinizing Clear Cell Carcinoma. I am only the second person to have this type of cancer in Manitoba. Caught at stage 4 - chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are not options. My only course of action is an experimental form of immunotherapy. I recently began my treatment, and although my health continues to worsen, I am hoping for a miracle. As I now have a feeding tube, am on high doses of numerous pain medications, and require regular doctor’s visits, I now need more assistance on a daily basis. As I am undergoing experimental treatment, most of my medication costs are not covered and I have no insurance. As most can imagine, this is a scary situation for me – and terrifying for my children.
This time is made especially more difficult as my parents and extended family are still in Sierra Leone. With the support of my church, I recently applied to have my mother come to Winnipeg to help me, and to be with my children. Unfortunately, my application was rejected as I do not have $10,000 available to support her while she is in the country.
These are the reasons why I am appealing to you. I would appreciate support, however small, in order to be able to pay for my mounting medical costs, including multiple prescription medications, my family obligations, and have my mother join us in Canada.
