Lani's War Chest (Medical Expenses)

There is no way to truly capture the essence of my incredible, vibrant sister in such a short space, but I will do my best to tell her story.
Leilani lives life out loud. Her passionate and fun-loving personality is infectious, where we spend entire phone calls just laughing and reminiscing. The word “can’t“ does not exist in her vocabulary and she never takes no for an answer. Lani gives 100% to everything she does, from flamenco lessons to paddle-boarding, from triathalons to cycling, and my favorite - becoming Ms. Nina Mala, the roller derby queen. Her zest for life is contagious, said best in her words, “even my hobbies have hobbies”. Just ask her about her paddle-boarding dog… It’s quite a story.
Put simply, to know Leilani is to Love Leilani. She has dedicated her life to serving others and conserving wildlife for future generations. A call that is dear to her heart, so that one day when her son Joaquin is older he can enjoy the beauty of wildlife that she so cherishes. Lani’s dedication is not more evident than in her position with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. As a Wildlife Inspector, she has proudly served our government, working to prevent the exploitation and smuggling of wildlife, including endangered species like elephants and rhinoceros. Leilani was on the front lines of last year’s New York City Ivory Crush bringing awareness to the decimation and poaching of the African elephant. She has spent the last decade curbing the illegal wildlife trade in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ports of New York and New Jersey through her tireless work as a Wildlife Inspector. Leilani was one of the first in her office to volunteer as a first responder for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. She travelled to Louisiana and worked weeks on end rescuing oiled seabirds affected by the spill.
Without a doubt, Leilani is the first person to come to another’s aid in their time of need, but it’s actually more than that... Lani senses when a person is in need, whether they know it themselves or not. She always seems to know whether someone needs that extra push, some tough love, a distraction and a good laugh, or a shoulder to cry on when times get tough. Without a doubt, LANI IS ALWAYS THERE. The ultimate cheerleader and motivator, she wants nothing more than to see others succeed and grow to fill their potential. She is the most amazing mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend I have ever seen.
It might come as a surprise to you (even those who know her well) that Lani has been fighting a personal war with cancer for over a decade. She does not often talk about her daily health struggles because she does not want to burden anyone with her troubles. For those of us who have accompanied her on her epic journey to slay cancer’s @ss, we have witnessed a living legend. Lani the fighter is sometimes down, but NEVER out. She continues to meet every challenge with the same grace, determination, spitfire and positive attitude that she leads her life. After many rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, and repeated setbacks, Leilani is now in the toughest battle thus far. Through it all, Leilani has kept her smile, her humor, and her love for life and family. Leilani WILL keep fighting every day of her life to have as much time as possibly to spend with her equally amazing and spirited teenage son, Joaquin…..Quinn.
Lani is fierce. Lani is loyal. Lani always has your back. Now it is time to have hers. Her medical bills are mounting at an alarming rate, she is no longer able to work, and she needs our help.
