High school students can now learn the language spoken between tribes in Oregon for hundreds of years. Lane Community College,  in collaboration with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde language program, is offering courses in Chinuk Wawa online this year. Students in high schools all across Lane County can choose this language to fulfill their world language requirements accredited both for high school graduation and OUS college admissions.

Chinuk Wawa served as the language of communication between speakers of different regional languages – tribal and non-tribal. Students will learn both the language and the history and culture of the First People of this area. The class is scheduled on Zoom from 4 to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning September 29th, 2020.

But we need your help to enroll students this fall! It costs about $700 in tuition and fees for one student to take one term of Chinuk Wawa. Most students cannot afford this. Any Lane County student, especially a Native student, should have the right to choose Chinuk Wawa without additional cost to them.

Our goal is to raise enough money to create a scholarship for at least ten high school students to enroll in CW101 and CW 102 this year. An separate scholarship fund pays the tuition for the remaining term of the first year.

Do your part to support language revitalization, decolonize education and offer relevant and meaningful educational opportunities to our students. For more detailed information visit the LCC Chinuk Wawa Program.
