My name is Jennifer Edwards and I am a ballet teacher and graduate student in New Haven, CT. The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to allow a family to be together again. My student E and her brother, both well under the age of 18, have been without a parent since their father was picked up and imprisoned by ICE on the morning of June 23, 2017. This man has no criminal record and is a contributing member of society whose only desire is to get back together with his children. In the meantime E, her little brother and her two older sisters are all trying to get by together here in Connecticut. Two of these individuals are under the age of 18, and one of them is under the age of 21. They worry every day about their dad, knowing he is in prison. They have had to leave their home, their lives totally interrupted.
E’s family, including her father, DOES have a path to legal status here but not if their father remains in ICE custody where he will surely be deported very soon. Furthermore, if he is deported there is a chance that ICE will then come for E and her siblings. We CANNOT allow children to be sent to jail simply for existing! We have found a dedicated immigration lawyer to help this cause. We need to raise $20,000 to get E’s father out of ICE custody on bail and to get him the help he needs to be with his family again. The CT Immigrant Bail Fund has agreed to be the Obligor and make the bail payment to free T from ICE custody. Any money we raise beyond the $8,000 needed for the bail will go to reimbursing Dana Bucin our attorney for her expenses in representing T, and for any other legal fees that arise. We expect to make bail in the next 24 hours, fingers crossed. The GoFundMe money will go into my bank account because I have to have that amount written as a certified bank check. All funds will from my bank account then directly to a certified check for the bail and legal expenses.
The day after the presidential election E came to me, her teacher, and wanted to know if this now meant that she and her family were in danger. I did my best to reassure her that I would always do my best to protect her and her family, to fight to keep them safe. I promised her that there are still many of us in this land who have hearts that love and minds that do not discriminate. I want to be able to keep my promise to this little girl and to her family. This is a time not just for protest and Facebook posts, but a time for ACTION. Please act and donate so that we can prove to E and to her family that there is love and mercy in the world.
