Flathead County Search & Rescue Association is raising funds to purchase a dedicated lake boat to serve emergency response duties on Flathead Lake, located just south of Kalispell, MT.
This new boat will be moored on Flathead Lake to serve as a quick response unit for any water rescue or medical-type emergencies that occur on or near the lake. Currently, Flathead County Search & Rescue has only one boat considered safe for use on Flathead Lake, but that boat's primary function is for river rescues and cannot be located on Flathead Lake all summer. It will also function in various rescue duties as needed on other major bodies of water in and around Flathead County such as Hungry Horse Reservoir.
Flathead Lake is the largest natural, freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River, overall it is the 79th largest lake in the nation. Many waterfront homes and businesses surround it. The lake is increasingly used for recreational purposes as well. As the population of Flathead County increases, the need for a dedicated rescue resource on Flathead Lake has become more apparent. Flathead County SAR's ideal craft is the SAFE Boat 25 or 27-foot Full Cabin model. This vessel is large enough to handle the rough weather conditions of Flathead Lake and has an enclosed cab able to get rescue victims out of the water and into a climate-controlled environment.
