Sebastian’s fight against peritoneal cancer

This is my brother Sebastián Delgado, an agricultural engineer specialized in golf courses, a young man passionate about his profession and his life. In 2019 he obtained a job opportunity in Los Cabos Mexico and there my brother's medical history began.
In September 2019 Sebastian moved to Cabo San Lucas Mexico for a work opportunity, a few months after being there, Sebastian received a diagnosis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma. From there, exams, biopsies, medical and oncological appointments began to see what state he was in, what was the process to follow, what treatment he would receive, in addition to the emotional blow of receiving such a diagnosis at 27 years old. Always with his faith intact, a tremendous trust in God and all the attitude to face the situation.
The discomfort began, the pain, the tests continued, he was still working in Los Cabos, and in mid-December due to the type of tumor and its aggressiveness they decided that they would operate on him, and would perform a procedure called Hipec. HIPEC (Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy) consists of combining cytoreductive surgery (removal of all tumor implants inside the abdomen) with the administration of a dose of chemotherapy in the same surgical act. This process is very expensive and being a foreigner resulted in very large expenses that the family has had to deal with.
This surgery was performed on February 6, 2020, it lasted approximately 12 hours, and after the procedure my brother was in the ICU where we realized that because there were many blooms of small tumors located in the final part that connects the large intestine, they had performed a colostomy, something that we never expected.
Part of his recovery was in Mexico City, but due to the start of the Covid 19 Pandemic, he had to return to Colombia and, due to his health condition, resign from his job in Los Cabos.
His recovery process continued in Colombia, with all possible care and precautions, they performed chemotherapy sessions that in theory would help the process of eliminating Peritoneal Mesothelioma.
After his chemotherapy sessions and tests to verify that there were no tumors and that it was possible to perform surgery that would allow him to be reconnected and eliminate the colostomy, he had surgery in May 2021.
The surgery was successful and months after he received recommendations of the oncologist doctors and surgeons who handle my brother's case, he began the search for a new job opportunity which landed him as a superintendent in a golf course in Cancun. Therefore, in the month of August 2021 he begins his journey of starting over. Being there living and working in Cancun, he undergoes routine and control exams and in the month of October after feeling some aches and pains, he undergoes an urgent tomography, and to his surprise, the results show that he has abdominal tumors again encapsulated in four zones of the intestine, liver, spleen, and stomach.
He consults with his oncologist and his other specialists and after some tests and others they confirm that the cancer has returned and that they should operate as soon as possible.
This makes my brother in December 2021 leave his work again in Cancun and return to Colombia to undergo surgery.
His surgery was performed on February 9, 2022, where they performed the HIPEC since it is the only treatment that can act on this type of carcinoma. During surgery the tumors were larger than expected and 20% of his liver had to be removed as well as his spleen.
Thank God they were able to remove all the tumors visible to the eye! Chemotherapy (HIPEC)was performed, and the surgery went well. Right now he is in the ICU, where he will remain for the next few days.
There are months of additional treatments, rehabilitation, and very big adjustments to his lifestyle.
It is going to be more than two years with this disease, but even so and with all that this implies, he has never lost faith, hope, strength! Even though he falls, he gets up with more strength and encouragement to move forward.
His life is full of dreams, faith, and an extremely motivating work ethic!
It is a living testimony of the strength and hope that comes from having complete abandonment and trust in God. It is a reflection that in great suffering and pain, we can accompany Christ to carry his cross. We as a family are with him every moment and we will continue by his side in every step and process so that he can continue building his life!
The support of his friends and the love of his girlfriend make his strength greater. We have the conviction and trusting faith that everything will turn out very well!

En Septiembre del 2019 Sebastián se trasladó por motivos laborales a Cabo San Lucas México, a los pocos meses de estar allí, Sebastian recibió un diagnóstico de Mesotelioma Peritoneal. Desde allí comenzaron exámenes, biopsias, citas médicas, oncológicas para ver en qué estado estaba, cuál era el proceso a seguir, qué tratamiento recibirá, además del golpe emocional de mi hermano que con 27 años se encontraba con un diagnóstico fuerte y trabajando en otro país. Siempre con la fé intacta, una confianza tremenda en Dios y toda la actitud para afrontar la situación.
Comenzaron las molestias, los dolores, continuaron los exámenes, él seguía trabajando en Los Cabos, a mediados de Diciembre debido a el tipo de tumor y agresividad del mismo decidieron que lo operarian, le realizaron un procedimiento llamado Hipec. HIPEC (Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy) consiste en combinar en un mismo acto quirúrgico la cirugía citorreductora (la extirpación de todos los implantes tumorales que haya dentro del abdomen), con la administración de una dosis de quimioterapia. Este proceso es muy costoso y siendo extranjero resultó en gastos muy grandes que la familia ha tenido que abordar.
Esta cirugía fue realizada el día 6 de febrero del 2020, duró aproximadamente 12 horas, posterior al procedimiento mi hermano pasó a la UCI en dónde además de verlo conectado nos dimos cuenta que debido a que habían muchos florecimientos de tumores pequeños localizados en la parte final que conecta el intestino grueso, le habían realizado una colostomía, algo que en ningún momento nos esperábamos.
Parte de su recuperación la tuvo en ciudad de México pero debido al inicio de la Pandemia Covid 19 debió devolverse a Colombia y por su condición de salud, renunciar a su trabajo en Los Cabos.
Su proceso de recuperación continuo en Colombia, con todos los cuidados y precauciones posibles, le realizaron sesiones de quimioterapia que en teoría ayudarían al proceso de eliminación del Mesotelioma Peritoneal.
Después de sus sesiones de quimioterapia y de exámenes para verificar que no había tumores y que era posible realizarle una cirugía que permitiera conectarlo nuevamente y eliminar la colostomía, lo intervienen en Mayo del 2021.
La cirugía fue de cuidado y nuevamente su recuperación fue lenta, al igual que los cuidados en su alimentación y en su estilo de vida, meses después de la cirugía, de recomendaciones de los médicos y cirujanos oncólogos que llevan el caso de mi hermano, sigue en controles y exámenes los cuales indican que aparentemente todo va bien, por tal motivo comienza la búsqueda de trabajo obteniendo así una oportunidad laboral de superintendente en un campo de golf en Cancún. Por lo cual en el mes de agosto del 2021 emprende su viaje con todas las ilusiones en comenzar de nuevo. Al estar allí viviendo y trabajando en Cancún se hace exámenes de rutina y control y en el mes de Octubre después de sentir algunas molestias y dolores, se somete a una tomografía urgente, y para sorpresa de él, los resultados arrojan que nuevamente tiene tumoraciones abdominales encapsuladas en cuatro zonas del intestino, hígado, bazo, y estómago.
Consulta con su oncólogo y demás especialistas y después de unos exámenes y demás le confirman que evidentemente el cáncer volvió y que deben operar lo más pronto posible.
Esto hace que mi hermano en diciembre del 2021 deje su trabajo nuevamente en Cancún y se regrese a Colombia para ser intervenido.
Su cirugía fue realizada este 9 de febrero del 2022, nuevamente le realizaron el Hipec ya que es el único tratamiento que puede actuar en ese tipo de carcinoma. Durante la cirugía los tumores eran más de los esperados y tuvieron que extirpar el 20% de su hígado y el bazo. Gracias a Dios pudieron eliminar todos los tumores y quedó limpio por dentro. La quimioterapia (HIPEC) pudo ser realizada, y la cirugía resultó bien. En estos momentos se encuentra en UCI, donde permanecerá por los próximos días.
Se vienen meses de tratamientos adicionales, rehabilitación, y ajustes muy grandes a su estilo de vida.
Ya serán más de dos años con esta enfermedad, pero que aún así y con todo lo que esto implica, jamás ha perdido, la fé, esperanza, la fortaleza y que aunque se cae vuelve , se levanta con más fuerzas y ánimos de seguir adelante, su vida está llena de ilusiones y anhelos, deseos. Es un testimonio vivo de la fuerza y esperanza que resulta de tener un abandono y confianza enteramente en Dios. Es un reflejo de que en gran sufrimiento y dolor, podemos acompañar a Cristo a cargar con su cruz. Nosotros como familia estamos cada momento con él y seguiremos a su lado en cada paso y proceso hasta que nuevamente pueda alzar alas y pueda seguir construyendo su vida, el apoyo de sus amigos y el amor de su novia hacen que su fortaleza sea más grande. Tenemos la convicción y la fé intacta de que todo saldrá bien.
