G Strong to fight ovarian cancer
On November 14th, the morning after a grueling surgery, our good friend Gina Cappello Gatchell was told she had cancer. It was a devastating blow to her and her family.
This news came after months of feeling abnormal. Cancer was the last thing on her mind and each visit to the doctor resulted in misdiagnosis. Finally, a serious pain in her abdomen sent her to the ER where they found a small amount of fluid in her lungs, gave her some medicine and sent her home. The next day her General Practitioner sent her for a CAT scan where they found a large tumor. She was sent to the emergency room at Brigham and Women’s hospital and was scheduled for surgery the next day to get a biopsy. She remained upbeat with the hope it was simply a benign tumor where it could be removed. Unfortunately, that was not the case. In fact, it was much more serious. She was informed it was stage 3 Ovarian Cancer.
She knew the road ahead was long, but determined to be a “warrior”, was ready to fight this head on. Her doctor told her the odds were high to win the battle because she was a very healthy young woman who took very good care of herself.
Gina spent the next few weeks recovering. It was challenging due to the extensive nature of the surgery. Once the healing began, she immediately started an 18 week aggressive Chemotherapy treatment. At first, it was extremely difficult as the medicine had a merciless effect on her body. While she still contends with endless amounts of adversity, her physical and emotional welfare have improved. She is managing the pain like a true fighter.
The campaign has 2 goals:
a) To raise money for Gina and her family to ease the stress of the medical bills
b) To raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer.
