Kyle's 3-level Disc Replacement Surgery

Hello Everyone,

My name is Susan and I am raising funds for my husband Kyle. Anyone that knows us knows that we never ask for help, even when we should. We are the kind of people that would give the shirts off our backs to help another – Kyle has even done this on several occasions over the years.

A little “back” story:

Kyle injured his spine at work several years ago and it has gotten to the point where surgical intervention is the only way he can have a normal life again. He has a severely herniated disc in his lower back (L5-S1*) that is pinching his spinal nerves causing immense pain as well as sciatica down his left leg. In addition to this the two-disc spaces above are also showing changes due to the load compensation (L3-L4 and L4-L5*).

These spinal changes are now to the point of causing him immense pain, rendering him unable to walk, move, or sleep without the assistance of prescription pain medications. He is unable to live his life, work his job, or do any of the activities he once found enjoyable.

We have now consulted with six different spinal surgeons (both orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons), one even telling Kyle “Good job breaking your back before the age of 30”. At this time the only feasible option we have for surgical repair is a 3-level disc replacement. This surgery is not one that is available in Canada so we have been forced to seek medical care elsewhere, without the assistance of our Canadian medical system. This surgery will cost approximately $90,000 with travel expenses for Kyle and one support person.

In addition, due to the nature of this procedure there is a chance that it may cause damage to his reproduction tract so it is advisable to arrange family planning prior to the surgery. We are in the process of consulting with doctors on our IVF options prior to this surgery, which adds an additional cost to this journey.

Our goal from all of this is that Kyle can live a normal life, working the job he loves, ride his motorcycle, and raise his future children without being in constant pain and on high doses of pain medications for the next several decades of his life.
