After 7+ years of constantly being ill and suffering from a range of medical issues, and having a multitude of misdiagnosis, I was diagnosed in December with primary hyperparathyroidism. When one, or all, of the parathyroids develop tumors (there are 4), calcium levels in the body cannot be maintained properly and become elevated. (www.parathyroid.com ). High calcium levels basically short circuit your nervous system and brain function. For those who remember the Terri Schaivo case, it was a heart attack brought on by high calcium levels that led to her lack of oxygen and vegetative state.
Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism can range from generally not feeling well to constant headaches, heart conditions and liver issues. Of the 21 most common symptoms (http://www.parathyroid.com/parathyroid-symptoms.htm ) I am currently dealing with 12 to 14 symptoms on a daily basis. The average person dealing with hyperparathyroidism has 5 to 6 symptoms.
The only fix to bring calcium levels back to normal is surgery to remove the tumor inflicted parathyroid(s). The purpose of this fundraiser is to come up with the basic amount I would need to get that surgery. While I have insurance, I have a $5,750.00 deductible before my insurance will pay anything. Not only does the surgeon need to be paid but also the hospital, the anesthesiologist, the radiologist and the pathologist.
There is a certain amount that is due up front to the surgeon and some of the providers, and the rest will be billed later. The purpose of this fundraiser is to come up with the minimum required to get the surgery done. I will deal with making payments on the rest of the billed services after the fact. My main priority now is just to get well.
As a single mom, I'm pretty self-sufficient and tough. My kids and I have seen good times and bad. It's rare that I ask for help, if ever, but desperate times call for unconventional measures. Any help anyone would be willing to give would be incredible and appreciated. The boys and I will be eternally grateful to each of you. I know the boys are anxious to see me healthy again and to once again have a fully functional mom.
