Kula Kamala Ashram

Tax deductible
Welcome to Kula Kamala Ashram, a Professional Yoga Therapy training school, an educational center in Yogic & mindfulness teachings, a holistic retreat, a place of peace, healing, community and social and spiritual integration. In other words, a dream come true, a vision realized...

In 2007, I, together with my husband, founded a wonderful yoga school called kula-kamala-yoga. The school was inspired by my personal healing experience as I was reintegrating after a devastating diagnosis of Lymes Disease and Ehrlichiosis, which left me bed ridden for a year. After two surgeries, tons of antibiotic therapy, and finding a doctor who understood what I was going through, I finally began to recuperate. Although the Lymes Disease was coming under control, I was still feeling disconnected from myself, weak and tired, and depressed over the massive changes that happened to my body and my mind in such a short time. A very wise man, my husband, said "you should go practice yoga, it's always supported you before" but I could hardly walk up three steps never mind do a brisk challenging series of surya namaskar, warriors, and the like. He aptly reminded me of my own words, he said, "you always told me that Yoga is not about the postures" With that beautiful reminder I endeavored to return to the mat and to my monkey mind and reinvest in my own wellness. I completed a hatha yoga teacher training in the US, then went to India to study under my guru Swami Adhyatmananda of the Sivananda lineage. I took additional trainings in Anusara, Integrative Yoga Therapy, and Kripalu just to name a few. I am also trained in Ayurveda and Reiki. I have a PhD in Anthropology, specializing in human anatomy, diet and disease, and am currently working toward a Doctorate in Holistic Ministries, as well as a Certificate in Positive Psychology.

My journey has shown me the healing power of Yoga and has also illustrated that our contemporary approaches to wellness, although often well intentioned, are lacking a crucial piece, the human wholeness piece. I and my husband have dedicated our lives to providing individuals with special needs ranging from Autism to Zoonotic disease, from Cancer to Heart disease, from Stress to Grief, from anger to fear, basically from A to Z, a sanctuary for all ages where healing and wholeness are the focus and where we build on what is working and what is positive and compassionate. To that end We founded Kula Kamala Foundation, a 501c3 dedicated to human wholeness, human wellness and human happiness through Yoga and the specialized application of Yoga Therapy. I also train Yoga Therapists and utilize my network of specialists and organizations to place them in positions where their training will do the greatest good. Basically, we are a full service organization. We meet the needs of the public by training individuals in how to meet those needs through the techniques of Yoga, including Ayurveda.

We knew this path would be both rewarding and rigorous, with the endless supply of suffering that exists in the world and a general shortage of societal faith in the efficacy of Yoga to combat, resolve and then evolve that suffering toward a more peaceful state. We brought our Foundation's seva (service) to hospitals, special needs organizations, mental health organizations, schools and to you. As the demand/need for our service grows we must grow along with it. We have a lovely location in Toms River NJ where we are able to facilitate short day programs and day based extended trainings. It has become our dream to expand into a facility large enough to grow our programs and offer residential professional trainings, wellness retreats and host collaborative weekends for caregivers and agencies working with at-risk children, abused women and children, and basically any population that would like to explore how Yoga can help them heal from the trauma of this life and develop a perspective that including health, happiness and resiliency. I can not say enough how much this is needed in our world today where stress has become the number one factor in disease and where we, as a society, have forgotten how to slow down, nurture and appeal to our peaceful self.

This past year, we again saw the healing power of Yoga as Ed became diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Without hesitation he embraced even more deeply the path of Yoga and the wisdom of its healing. He modified diet and lifestyle, even when doctors told him not to bother, that it "wouldn't help anyway". He studied himself, his own suffering and the available information on modern medical and complementary approaches to cancer treatments. In the end his practice allowed him to make the best possible choices for himself and today he stands by my side in remission, a year after the doctors suggested that wasn't likely.

Again and again we see the power of these practices, the power of prayer/mantra, the power of faith, the power of peace, and the power of sankalpa/intention. Again and again we are drawn by the spiritual impulse to serve our communities through Yoga the way that Yoga has served us. With knowledge, open-heartedness, honesty and humility.

We see a need so strong that we searched high and low, from Vermont to Kentucky, and yes in New Jersey too, for a facility that is appropriate to our cause. We finally found it! The location that is to become the Kula Kamala Ashram (an Ashram is a spiritual school) is located at 17 Basket Rd in Reading, Pennsylvania. A 21,000 square foot sacred space on six acres of sacred land is being transformed into the Kula Kamala Ashram, Spiritual School, Holistic Ministry and Yoga Retreat Sanctuary and we are reaching out to you for your support! This fundraiser will permit us to make the necessary changes and upgrades to the building in order to begin offering programs starting May 3, 2015 (the original anniversary of kula-kamala-yoga).

We will open in three stages:

Stage I - day based classes and holistic ministries

Stage II - longer term professional trainings

Stage III - continued growth and expansion both at the Ashram and out in the community

We will also provide volunteer opportunities, as well as paid employment opportunities to a limited number of individuals who will aid in its day to day operations.

This is truly an amazing time and an amazing vision, an intentional healing and an opportunity to be part of the change that is so needed in the world today.

Funds raised will support the following needs:

Roof repair, maintenance and replacement
Well water testing and maintenance
Facility repairs and upgrades ex. floors, paint, etc.
