I've been on a journey to have Top Surgery for at least 3 years and have been struggling with reaching my goal for some time now.
One of my main struggles is finding a provider who honors Informed Consent AND takes insurance.
What Is Informed Consent?
"Informed Consent is a health care model used by providers around the world that allows patients to make decisions about their gender identity and health care. According to Informed Consent for Access to Trans Health (ICATH), the model reflects "the basic human right to self-actualization."
Often times, people seeking Top Surgery are required to get a letter from a mental health professional stating that they have been deemed psychologically ready for surgery before a surgeon will perform Top Surgery.
Being trans is not a mental illness and I shouldn't have to go through a YEAR of therapy to affirm who I am.
I have found a provider who will see me, Dr. Elliot W. Jacobs, and have already done the consultation. He has quoted me 30k (asks for the costs upfront) and I am asking for 33k, to cover Gofundme's cut and the costs for home care and being out of work for possibly 6 weeks.
This surgery is going to be intense, I'll be technically getting a double mastectomy. I'm nervous. I'm scared. But, I'm ready!
I am hoping to get this done before the end of the year, given COVID19 limitations.
