Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on Black communities. Whilst there is still some exploration of the causes underlying this, the very real impact of disruption in cultural practices leave families with a sense of unfinished business and feelings that they may not have paid the loss the recognition it deserves. Under Covid restrictions, there are more restrictive arrangements on getting together for those left behind.

Personally I know this pain as the recent death of my mother under the first Covid restrictions left our family struggling with the lack of our culturally familiar endings and arrangements. My mum, Effie Adelaide David (nee Coy) came from the small island of Carriacou in the West Indies and in the final years had expressed her wish to be  being buried there next to her mother. On the 4th June 2020, the worst possible thing for us happened and she died under the restrictions and we knew that her our ability to carry out her final wishes would not be possible as Grenada had closed its borders to maintain their low level of infections. To help us deal with this I produced a special blend of Rum based on Mum's heritage and shared it with my family and attendees at the cremation. I was blown away by the reception.

Rum as a drink imbued with social significance has been an  ever present partner for Black communities through it's use in libations, death and burial rituals and gatherings such as Nine-Nights, Big Drum dances, Wakes etc. It takes a sad occasions and transforms them into life-affirming events that marks the lives lived and provides a communal ending for the living.

Kromanti Rum is raising funds for the Majonzi Fund  through donations in reward for a bottle of Kromanti signature Rum.  Patrick Vernon OBE and Ubele Initiative  established the Majonzi Fund in April 2020 to provide small grants to help families, work colleagues, community groups so they can organise memorial events for BAME individuals who have died as a result of covid19. They are also raising money for the development of BAMEstream who are providing cultural appropriate bereavement support. Further details  Majonzi Fund
