Kristina and Anthony had a fire

Our house burned down, $45,000 is still owed to the bank, and the homeowners insurance policy isn't going to cover it.

A burned pile of rubble is all that is left of the home we built in Red Boiling Springs just 6 years ago. After being displaced earlier this year and having to rent a home in a neighboring town for a short time, we are devastated that our family will not be able to return to the home that holds so many memories and so much sweetness.

The person who was living in our house was out of town when the fire occurred, and they had invited an intern from the farm to housesit for them while they were away.
The intern was the last person in the house and said that they stoked the fire to keep it warm for their return, but that they were sure to turn the wood stove down before they left.
The fire investigator is not 100% certain of the cause of fire.

Although we had a homeowners insurance policy, we have been told by our insurance agent that having someone else living in the house and paying rent while we were unable to be there makes our policy null and void. Our insurance agent's superior has told us that they will try to figure something out to get us some money but that the situation doesn't look good.

We feel disappointed for not knowing that we were supposed to inform our homeowners insurance that someone else was living in the home we owned, we feel betrayed by the company and institution that we have been paying into and that is supposed to be there to catch us when we fall, and we feel greatly disheartened by the financial setback this has caused us and our dreams.

It is hard for us to turn to our community and to ask for help, but the reality we are facing after one of the already-most difficult years of our lives is overwhelming.

Costs Associated with Fire
  • $45,000 - Money still owed to bank on the mortgage of the house
  • $35 ,000 - Money already put into building and paying off the house which is no longer there
  • $10,000 - Personal items lost (i.e. everything stored in attic and basement, washer and dryer, refrigerator, cooking stove, wood burning stove, etc.)
  • $3,500 - Cleaning up for burned house
  • Unknown - Restarting

We are going to be okay, and even if this fundraiser doesn't raise any money, none of us will ever go hungry. We know there are countless human beings in more dire situations who need your help much more than we do, and we feel so fortunate to be together and that no one was hurt.

In gratitude, Kristina & Anthony
