Kristil's Krew

Kristil is a loving wife to James, a mother (mil), grandmother, daughter, and sister. She has been a HCA employee for 15 years, fulfilling various roles such as: ICU nurse, charge nurse, rapid responder, manager, and most importantly, a friend. From the CEO to the frequently seen patients, everyone at Kingwood Medical Center knows Kristil and her infectious personality and smile.

Kristil never had health issues until August 17th when I took her to the Kingwood Medical Center Emergency Department for pain in her legs and chest. She was admitted and treated for massive and extensive DVTs and PEs. She spent around 3 weeks in the hospital, underwent an embolectomy, began anticoagulation therapy, was tested for autoimmune and genetic disorders. She even ‘rode out Harvey’ in the hospital. She was finally released to go home the Friday after Harvey.

Unfortunately, it was not in the cards for her to stay home and recover for too long. 1 week later, Kristil began to have issues with her legs again. She came and had many lab and radiology tests on an outpatient basis, but was eventually re-admitted when the clots did not show signs of dissipating. She ended up having another thrombectomy, as both of her legs were almost completely occluded.  It was at this time that her physicians felt that more extensive testing was needed to determine the true cause of the clots. A CT scan revealed a large 8cm mass on her left ovary. She underwent a complete hysterectomy, and the pathology revealed stage 3 Ovarian Cancer.

After the hysterectomy, her family and physicians felt like she would be able to finally start the recovery stage. Sadly, this wasn’t the case. As if all of this wasn’t enough, two days after her hysterectomy, Kristil had an extreme drop in urinary output and was in a tremendous amount of pain. She was taken back into the operating room, where it was found that she had developed appendicitis, and she underwent an appendectomy.

Kristil’s entire hospital stay lasted from August until the end of October. She went from having a completely normal everyday life, to battling cancer to save her life. We can only imagine what it is like to have that drastic of a life change seemingly overnight, and the physical, emotional, and financial toll it could take on one’s spirit. Many people may not understand the full extent of what one of our own has recently endured, and with her permission, I wanted to share her story. I share this not only for the hopes of her seeing the large amount of people that she has touched in her life showing her the same support she has given them, but also for others who may be facing this same battle…to know that they are not alone in the struggle.

Even as she is just beginning chemotherapy, Kristil is already planning on when she will be able to return to the job she loves. She is hoping to come back to her KWMC family in January. Until then, this page will serve as a way that we can help both Kristil and her primary family get the support and see the love that they desperately need as they continue on this journey to 100% remission.
