According to some males, women just don’t know when to shut up. And you know what?

They’re right.

We won’t shut up when men try to legislate our bodies. We won’t shut up when they close doors. And we won’t shut up while men mistreat women in film.

I’m on a mission to stop the misogynistic madness in Hollywood, and I’m hoping you’ll pitch in.

A Cause Worth Fighting For

My name is Krista Hernandez. I’m the co-host and producer of The Madames Podcast. Every week we discuss movies from a feminine, inclusive perspective, striving to expose the misogyny that still pervades films. We often roast men like marshmallows over an open pit of sarcasm, and I now have the chance to do so on a grander scale.

I only wish it wasn’t thanks to Sam Raimi.

The piece caught the eye of the right person, and I’m now a presenter at the National Women’s Studies Association Annual Conference in Minneapolis, Nov 10-13. The NWSA promotes & supports the production & dissemination of knowledge about women & gender through teaching, learning, research, and service. In my talk, "Tangled Web of Women: Women’s Representation Across the Spiderverse," I’ll discuss the live-action Spider-Man movies as a microcosm of female progress in comic book films. As superhero films grow in number & popularity, their representation of women is more important than ever. So we have to hold filmmakers’ feet to the fire. I’ll do so at the NWSA conference, even if the TSA won’t let me bring my cauldron.

By The Numbers

It turns out that airlines & hotels don’t accept Monopoly money or precious gems (not even Infinity Stones) as currency. So I need some help with the overall trip expenses.

Here’s the breakdown:

NWSA Membership (required for attendance): $150

Annual Conference registration: $125

Airfare & hotel bundle: $774

TOTAL: $1,049

Every dollar you donate is more than just money. It’s a tangible way to support women collectively. It’s also a kick in the balls to every man who’s ever put those balls (or any other part of his anatomy) where they don’t belong. So I’m grateful for whatever you can contribute. But if it’s not in your budget, just sharing the campaign on your social media would also be greatly appreciated.
