My name is Akeiba Holmes. I’m 48 years old and I live in New Jersey. I’m a mother of 1 and a grandmother of 2. I was diagnosed with (SLE) Lupus at the age of 19. I was in car accident while pregnant and had to be hospitalized. During my medical treatment I found out through bloodwork that I had Lupus. I was determined not to let my diagnosis hold me back. I had a beautiful daughter. I also completed my certification to become a Dental Hygienist. I bought a house and was able to work and provide a happy stable home for my daughter.
I was managing well with my condition until my kidneys failed around the year 1997. I had to begin dialysis treatments which made it difficult for me to maintain a full-time job. I powered through. I went back to school to learn medical billing which allowed me to work from home. I was blessed with the support of family and friends! My daughter is now 25 years old and has blessed me with 2 beautiful grand babies.
Despite my winning spirit -- my medical condition has worsened over time and recently (August 2019) I became paralyzed from complications related to my Lupus condition.
I am paralyzed from the waist down and I have been working hard to adjust to my “new normal.” I am intentionally taking steps to remain positive and strengthen my body for daily tasks that require new routines.
Currently, I am preparing to transition back home from rehabilitation therapy. This transition requires me to purchase costly medical equipment and supplies. In addition to the supplies, a wheelchair accessible van would open the door to endless possibilities and provide me the independence to transport myself to dialysis and anywhere else I wish. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated and you will never know how much I thank you.
