Konane, our little miracle, veterinary fund

Donation protected
Hello!  Our cat, Konane, left home overnight on July, 29, 2019.  He has always been an indoor only cat.  We fostered him until he was old enough to adopt, and he’s been a part of our family for 4.5 years.  We posted signs on streets and online, placed fliers on doors and searched every day for him—the work finally paid off yesterday.  I received a call that Konane,  emaciated, near death and badly hurt, followed a very kind woman into her garage for help.

Konane was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where the doctor strongly and repeatedly suggested he be euthanized.  I refused repeatedly. He didn’t live this long on his own and reach out for help from a kind stranger to be put down.   I put down my credit card to start pain medication and diagnostics.  They required the full estimate to be paid before doing anything for him.

His injuries are tremendous.  He is a large cat who dropped from 14 lbs to 5 lbs.  During this time, he got his front paw through the collar so it was around his neck and ran under his arm—it did not break away.  On one hand, the collar was a godsend as he was identified quickly from tags, but it appears that the deep laceration he has under his arm was likely from the collar.  When he was found, parasites (I don’t want to be too descriptive for sensitive readers) had infested the wound and made their way down his body under the skin.  We don’t know how much muscle was lost to emaciation versus parasites.  They had even tried to get into his nail beds as the stench from his wound attracted them.

Diagnostics have shown that his body cavities are intact and he has use of all 4 legs!  Initial bloodwork showed that he had a fighting chance to survive!  At that time, I knew I had made the right decision for our sweet 4.5 year old miracle!

Konane is still in critical condition, but he’s a fighter!  He’s improving slowly and has the fight in him to overcome this.  He started eating today—we’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re definitely moving in that direction.  The plan is to stabilize him at the emergency vet and move him to our vet.  Our vet has graciously backed us on every decision and is willing to take him on once he’s stable to maintain care yet try to keep costs down.

We have put down almost $8400 so far, and we’re not anywhere near the finish line of recovery.  We are hoping that other animal lovers might be willing and able
to contribute to help with the costs.  While expensive, Konane deserves the chance to keep fighting.  We are doing the best we can for our fur baby and will continue to do so.  I wouldn’t give up on him the 8-9 weeks I searched for him, and I won’t give up on him now.  It’s a miracle he survived and both our vet and I are confident he can recover and have a good quality of life.  If you can, please consider helping us.  Whether you are able to or not, please send prayers our way...he is one of our greatest loves and he’s defied the odds thus far.  We hope for a full recovery and many, many years of love, meows, and snuggles!
